make sure you use a Porsche friendly machine shop. You need special shims to get the spring height set correctly after a valve job.

It should not cost more than $150-200 in labor.

If you've got the head off and the guides and everything are good, you should be able to replace the valve yourself.

If you don't have the tools and the experience to use them you will never know what is good. You have done a lot of work to take the head off. Get a knowledgeable machine shop do a complete valve job. How would you feel if you get it all back together and bad valve guides start causing more problems. and you have to do it all over again.

chris whats so special about the shims ?? the dia ??
i good shop would just punch them out of sheet and they would be right
you can take the time to carfully do all the install heights and seat pressures or you can cut of lap seats in .

you can lap sets in an hoar or spend a day blueprinting a head much in between i saw the invoce from my friends head recently, who knew no better and he has been extensively rapped on he has had head that he trustingly sent to the US . I will kind of leave at that as my friend has not endorsed my descust at this stage .

be carful mate there are some sharks around and with good reputations

The only thing 'special' about them is that you either get the Porsche factory assortment (many different thicknesses and $$$) or you make your own (I get mine laser cut to size). The point is that a non Porsche shop will not have them sitting on the shelf. If you have a shop that will fab the shims (for a reasonable price!) you are going to the right place! Not many of them left over here in the states, and a lot fewer that will cater to the 944 crowd.
As for the sharks…..cue the Jaws music….Some folks sell performance, some sell hype, some sell dreams.

get some brass shim in a can whip up some punches on the lathe in about 20 minutes and belt some out with a bit or hard wood
or you can also make up a nice die with 2 blocks
and I'm sure they can by those shim's in a heap of sizes they are a pretty common size .
and if thy are a few mm small its no bi deal as it under the steel retainer
