Default Review of 968 box in a 951

Some great friends helped me install the new six speed, KW V3 suspension, Elephant Poly Bronze bushings, new fuel tank, and derlin bushings everywhere else.

The six speed does shift nicer than the 951 box. I don't have the speedo hooked up yet, so I can't comment on the actual speed in gears. What is attractive to me is that the car feels like my old 2 cycle dirt bikes. At redline, the next gear is around 4K, right in my particular motors sweet spot. I haven't taken it out on a track, or even a long drive, but I do like it and don't notice much difference between 1st and second. Third and fourth is like splitting third as compared to the five speed. I like rowing through gears, so it's fun for me. The new LSD really hooks up. Car feels really tight and eager to run.

I can truly recommend this swap. Future regearing is much easier, as they are more available for this box. Some say it's stronger, some say it's not. Every racer I talked with said it's stronger. (Folks actually using them in their cars) My motor builder states it stronger. Whatever, I got a good deal on it, and my old five speed was toast.

The KW and elephant racing stuff is awesome. Good ride, but when you are in a corner, there is very little roll. Immediate steering response, and just feels much more modern. Amazing ride when just running around. My rear squat is almost gone.

I'm having the car aligned tomorrow, and I'll know more about the actual car's handling. Corner weight balance after that, and I should be good to go for a track day.

Thanks for all the help from many listers. You know who you are, and I really appreciate your help over the years.

Regards,

George

George- I guess I can assume the transmission arrived in one piece . . . Glad you like the six speed!

My understanding was that some of the gears from G50 are interchangeable with the 968? Is this what you mean George? Glad the suspension is working out for you.

George,

I did the same 6-speed conversion in my car two years ago. While driving in traffic there is a dramitic improvement. However, at WOT I have found 1st and 2nd to be to low. I can't shift fast enough going throug the gears. Also 3rd is a bit on the low side but passable. My best power gears are 4th and 5th. One of my next upgrades will be to change the gear ratios. I would like the gears to be a little taller and greater separation between gears, especially 1st and 2nd.

How much RWHP are you running?

Corner balance, then alignment. Or you will have to pay for an alignment twice.

Only the Diff itself is interchangable between the G50 and G44(968 six speed), the gears along with the Crownwheel and pinion are not interchangable parts. The G50 is stronger still. its gears are slightly bigger

That is more than I have. It will be interesting to see how George feels about the upgrade after he has driven the car for a while and put it through its paces.

I can't imagine shorter gears than in my car right now. the first three are completely useless on regular street tires. Top of 3rd is good if I start in that gear.

that trans fits so nice, like it was made for the car. And yes we used the stock 951 "over trans bridge."
