Default DME binary FQS timing retard question

Hi,
is anyone familiar with the DME binary location for modifying the timing retard provided by FQS swich positions 4 to 7 ? I guess it is also possible that it is not modifiable.
One of the listers here wanted me to modify this for him for an E85 application and I don't want to touch timing without being 100% sure due to the consequences of getting it wrong!
thanks for any assistance

I don't know the answer to the question, but would like to ask one of you. Is it relatively easy to bump the whole timing up in the other direction?

What I mean is instead of having the first positions being no change, they would be bumped up 3 degrees and then you would have the option of going back 3 degrees like it is now but it wouldn't really be retarding it just putting it back.

Is this person wanting to still pull timing with the E85? If so, in my experience this is going the wrong way.

Hi Sid, I'm not aware of any global advance setting.
You could modify all of the idle, part-throttle and WOT timing maps to move timing in either direction which would not be an enjoyable exercise. If you wanted to advance timing across the board, it would be nice to modify the FQS retard setting for positions 4-7 to be an advance figure instead. Hopefully its possible.
thanks

Ohh and one idea I have to get a few degrees of timing.

I am thinking about modifying the cap by removing some of the material where the positioning tab is and doing it the old fashioned way by rotating the cap to rotor relationship.

I amy be able to try this tonight I will show the results if it works. I have a nice advance timing light to see the difference if it does.

Won't the DME still fire the plug at the same time, with the spark just arcing from the rotor to the closest plug post?

Yes.

Sid, you could try making the Speed/Reference sensor bracket adjustable...

Ofcourse it is possible. All "tuning Chips" use this possibility.

Rotor mod will not work You need to adjust Speed/reference sensors. Widly used trick in BMW/VW world.

It's a lot less of a retard question than many questions that are asked here.

Duuuh, I didn't think about the triggering mechanism also being attached to the housing and rotating on the older distributors.

I wish I had thought of this a couple of weeks ago when the bellhousing was off I don't think I want to try to open up the mounting holes now. Changing the relationship of the sensors to the pins on flywheel makes total sense.

Oh well it is what it is
