Default Noise from Steering column / wheel

When I turn my steering wheel, in either direction, it makes a "scrunching" (a highly technical term that refers to not grinding or screeching, but somewhere in between) noise. The noise occurs when one initially turns the wheel, but not throughout the turning. It appears to be coming from the hub.

Note my car has a 930 steering wheel.

Has anyone experienced this sort of noise before?

I assume that it is a bushing or something that is failing and my temprary solution will be to "inject" lubricant (WD40) to see if that helps. Any other recommendations.

Thanks

Well, since no one else has stepped in, I figure I might as well throw this out there...

The wiper/turn signal stalk assembly that the hub attaches to has horn contacts inside it that will usually screech/squeal (I know this isn't quite what you described, though) when turning the wheel just past center in either direction. Sorry I do not really know what the fix is but you should be able to find a lot of information on the subject.

You know I simply assumed it was a bushing in the column itself, but you are right that is an excellent area of investigation. I will see what a bit of grease does to reduce the noise... I never use the horn anyways

Whatever you do, disconnect the battery before taking the steering column apart. A lister here fried his harness from the column to the fuse box just by pinching a wire wrong.

Thanks Steve.

Whenever there is the remote chance of a short, the battery gets disconnected...

I think I had this same noise several years ago. Must has been somewhere in the horn ring because the sound went away when I put on an aftermarket wheel w/ no horn.
