Default I HATE EMISSIONS TESTS!!!!!

Hokay. so my car has been at the dealer for 3 days trying to get it to pass emissions. The stock chip, FPR, and catalyst have all been put back in.

with it STOCK... it's still failing. everything except CO is passing, and it's failing CO by 3 GPM. the dealer is toying with the FQS switch and the CO adjustment on the AFM, and it's damn close, but no pass.

What could be causing my car to be dumping that much fuel into the cylinders?

the last test, 2 years ago, with the 3 bar FPR and the vitesse chip, it passed with flying colors. WHY BANJO? WHY!??!?!?!?!?

Geoff, The O2 sensor could be bad. Keep in mind, unless you get the cat converter VERY hot, it will not do it's job. I experimented with this just for my own experience. The same car, driven 10 minutes or less, failed the test. Then I drove it for 30-35 miles, highway cruising (no boost), didn't shut it off before the test and it passed without a problem.

If your car is at the dealer, I doubt they are driving the car to get the cat hot. Maybe that's the problem! Something to consider.

Ok. well, they tested things and couldn't get it done today. since I need it for the fest, I'm pulling it out of the shop, and will bring it back after the trip. When the shop foreman returns from vacation, he's going to give it a go. he started on Porsches before the 944 was released, and he "made his money" on these cars.

we discussed TPS issues, I'll bring up the O2 sensor, and we discussed sticking injectors. we'll have closure in a week.

I had that same problem years ago. This was back in 98 or something. Anyway failed emissions 100% stock. Then I took it back and make sure I got the exhaust temps up and water temps up and never shut the car off in line. The car passed just fine and has ever since.

I failed last year after passing a number of times. It is an 86 951, stock. I finally had some luck after replacing the O2 sensor and readjusting the CO at the AFM. The plug was gone from mine so someone had adjusted it in the past. If you are faiing on CO this might help.

I agree, check the O2 sensor and test it hot. Also, What's the history of the catalyst? If it is original, it is about 20 yrs old and may not really be very active anymore even if it has been out of the car.

I had the same problem last year and it was the cat. Good thing was that after replacing it my car is a lot quicker now! My cat was almost completly plugged.

+1 O2 sensor, it's an easy test.

I second this. My car always struggled to get just under the CA limits. After installing a new converter, the numbers came way way down. And, it was a cheap universal converter to boot. Start by making sure the car is in good tune otherwise though -- new O2 sensor, no vacuum leaks, strong ignition, idle set correctly, temp sensors working, etc.

I feel bad for you guys! Thankfully no emissions around here! (with historic plates anyway!)

Even though I had a hard time with emissions, it was worth it. After getting everything dialed in, it never ran better. After all, you are blowing stuff out the tail pipe that you would rather be burning.

The people I feel sorry for are the non-enthusiast masses who have to struggle with this stuff. Most of them are at the mercy of the "system" and it is causing increasing hostility between the citizenry and the government. Lots of people are driving around with expired plates and it is costing the state lots of money. Here at least.

Nope. I've got a hookup there. used to work there. basically for those 2 days before I pulled it out for the fest, I didn't get charged. once it's fixed, it's looking like I'll be charged for an hour.

I know something is wrong because compared with this time last year, I netted about 5 mpg less on the highway. it's dumping fuel like it grows on trees.
