Default belt squeal

Guys, I searched in the archives, but am unsure. I turned on the ac today and was met w/ a loud squealing noise that went away after awhile (w/ engine speed). The voltimeter dropped to 12v during this occurrence. The noise goes away w/ no AC. Is it an AC belt that I am looking at?

your alternator/ac belt (same belt) is old/loose/needs replacement.

yeah, I replaced mine recently, and the A/C works better... Anyway, if that doesn't work, I've heard that the A/C compressors on these cars tend to enjoy a good seize up.

My money's on the compressor locking up, if the AC is not working...

Happened to me, with the exact symptoms you described, plus the A/C was no longer chilling (you didn't say if the A/C still worked...)

If however the A/C still works, then the belt should be tightened or possibly replaced (they get slippy and glazed with age/use. -While you're at it, CHECK THE SIGHT GLASS!!! -If you see bubbles, bet it topped off before it does run low and seize-up completely.

AC is working fine today w/ no squeaks. I am assuming it's the belt. I'll have it in to the mechanic this weekend for boost gauge install and oil change, so I'll have him check. Thanks for the help.

Lucky you, then!

Do have him check the sight-glass... since R12 may not be exactly cheap, it's a WHOLE lot cheaper than a new compressor!

yea those compressors ain't cheap. If mine goes, I really don't know if I'll put a new one in, or delete the A/C.
