I emailed Top Gear and requested to have "The Stig" drive a well sorted 951 vs the new Carerra. Would love to see a 3.0L or larger 500rwhp 951 on their track. They could compare costs vs performance and to see how the poor man's porsche stacks up.

It seems as if they dislike the 911 and maybe they will do something like that in the future. Oh, I didnt get a reply yet.

Right. I would think it would have to be a stock 951. They aren't really a "mod" show. Its more of "fast cars right off the shelf". Plus, there are to many variables in upgrading a car.

I still think its a fantastic idea though. A stock 951 is still fast, and would show how fast you can go in a car that doesn't cost half a million dollars. I think they're faster than even the new Imprezas and stuff. (maybe not straight line speed, but would turn better). Even a few times for thier challenges, they have said "No Porches". Meaning, the older P-cars, even though cheap, are way better than anything else in the price range.

It would be great to see how some older cars do against thier newer countparts.

Just saw the show where "no Porsches" were allowed.

Cheapest coupe (coo-pay) BMW650, Old Jag, Mitsu Starion
They were allowed to use money left over on "up-grades"

But I'm not sure if they would compare an old Porsche to a new one.
Of course I would prefer they compare the "S" or 1990 version to whatever.

I just don't see it happening. Great idea though.

Well a couple of series ago they took an old beat-up v12 Jag XJS, stripped it out and fitted NO2 and put it up against a string of supercars over an off the line race. It trounced them all! They've also done a few features of old cars vs new cars such as mk1 Golf GTi's vs the latest Golf GTi and '80's supercars vs modern supercars.

Unfortunately though if Top Gear were to take up your request they would probably use the feature to abuse old modified cars and their owners/enthusiasts. I would love to see it though, but reckon the CGT would show the old girl a trick or two.

How about having a monetary budget as the constraint. So you can have your $X000 997 vs a modded 951. How much is a 997 in the UK? Got to be at least 50,000 pounds. God knows what you could get into a 951 with that sort of money. So using Paul's car or the new owner of Ben's car (UK cars) you could show just what is available for half the money....type of theme??

I would think that we pay over $300k Aussie for a 997s. Aussie dollar is worth over .96c of US dollar!!! Go figure...Hmm someone is making some money out here. Way lower volume of cars sold of course but that doesn't help the individual. Oh and they're (the thieves...Aust govt.) are now slugging people more tax for luxury items such as these cars. Guess it doesn't pay to be rich...

The basic Carrera's start at £63k, but by the time you spec it up and get it on the road and pay the UK government and EU bureaucrats their slice you're going to be knocking on the door of £70k. I'm pretty sure a modded 951 that has cost its owner £35k is going to be quicker than half as fast so is definitely better value for money, but value for money is a concept lost on the TG gang as they think a £140k Ferrari or Lambo is good value for money!!

Email the US version of the show. I'm sure they'd be willing to take up a local vehicle for the test, considering that they would probably love to have some stories to do, being new and all.

I can't remember when the US version is slated to start, but I believe NBC owns the rights.

nahhh, it'd be much more entertaining to hear clarkson actually say porsche put the engine in the right place for once and i bet he'd even say "this car is without a doubt much better than the standard 911" Totally worth fighting to get it on the BBC version!

Along the same lines, somebody over on vwvortex has some spy shots from the set of Top Gear America... Anyone see something of interest to us?
