Default turbo conversion

Wanted to get some real world input from xperienced owners/drivers.

Contemplating a turbo conversionof my S2 cab, is it really worth 20-30k for a 16v conversion vs. a freshly rebuilt turbo S motor with some light upgrades?

I have a turbo S doner car already which can probably be freshened completely for under 10k.

Now from what I have been told to do a 16V properly source all the right parts and have reliabiltity big $$$ jump for an xtra 100-125 hp.

these engines have crappy bottom ends and this is were you will spend for reliability the 16v head is realy good there is nothing needed to be spent on the head to perform like a hot 8v
i kind of feel 8v is the best as it all (almost) bolts together up to about 450 hp if you want more than that 16v is better

If your stock engine is in good shape we can turbo you car for about 10K.It would be a low boost set-up that will add about 100 horsepower to the wheels. If you want more then that, you wil need to build the bottom-end.

Search will yield a lot of results. There was a guy in South Africa (I believe) that turbo'd his stock bottom end and ended up with some pretty severe piston slap. He claimed that the engine was never opened by himself or the PO.

You could try PM'ing 'Mikes3.0cabturbo'. He did this down here in Sydney but I haven't seen him around these parts for months.

He told me everything cost him like $4k? or something and a lot of time and yielded loads of power.

When all is said and done, it is way easier to swap in a 951 engine than to convert a 16v NA engine to an 8v turbo. If you want to make it a low boost 16v turbo, then depending on how you do it, it can be easier than a 951 engine swap.

Just get a turbo motor, and hit up a coupla the vendors for some go fast goodies. $1,500 or there abouts for a motor, and anywhere from 3-7 more grand for go-faster parts. Still under 10 grand, and way over 300 HP.

I really don't think there is a free 16v lunch as evidenced.

You beat me to it Tom. That's what a 4K turbo conversion will get you.

You have to be realistic about your expectations when it comes to turbo coversions. For 10K you can get a low boost set-up installed and tuned that adds an extra 100 horsepower at the wheels. If you want a full blown 450WHP 16 valve monster, then you are going to be in it for a hell of alot more.

Exactly, that's why Mike's $4k turbo broke, he turned the boost too high. And the headgasket was 18 years old anyway.
