Can someone recommend a good engine shop in the SF bay area? I'm looking into building a 2.8L so I need to have some cylinders bored out to 100.5mm. I live in San Francisco proper and I don't want to ship this block anywhere, I just want to take it to the shop myself, so somewhere in the peninsula or east bay would be great. TIA.

Arash,
Ellsworth Brothers in Mountain View. They have been machining Porsche engines for years. They bored my 944 NA block to first over about 8 years ago. The engine is still running strong. I take all my stuff to them. Tell Doug and Steve that Bill says hi. Great guys. Can and will do custom work.

Arash,
So you broke your engine? I guess it will be awhile before you are back on the track. I enjoyed watching you tear up Laguna Seca. If you hear of another one of these events let me know, I might take my 951 out onto the tarmac. Oh, let Chris L know that I want my chair back, without food stains on it. he, he!

Bill, thankfully my engine is fine and the car is still being driven daily. But I had been planning a turbo conversion for this summer for the past year, i.e. an 8v 968 engine. While considering the pile of parts I have at my disposal, along with the spare 951 engine, I thought I should also consider building other engine configurations. I still have to decide but I wanted to talk to some shops about the finer detail$ of building a 2.8L.
I haven't heard from Chris for a while but if I do I'll let him know! I went back to Laguna in April and had a blast... we definitely need to do that again.
What kind of expense should I expect for boring out the cylinders to 1st oversize 100.5mm? I plan to do the clearance modifications myself with a dremel.

One of the best Porsche machinests in the country is Mike Stimpson in San Mateo. You may need an introduction from me if you would like to use him, PM me if interested.

Thanks for all the info guys. I just wanted to check if anyone else has something to add before I head out with the engine in the trunk.

Bit late but:
I use Junipero Serra Auto in Daly City after being recommended by another Rennlistser a few years ago. George and Jimmy are father and son Porsche enthusiasts and absolutely LOVE these cars. They are extremely nice to deal with and retain old fashioned integrity as the core of their business. They don't mind me going down to take pics during repairs and Jimmy takes pain to walk me through all repairs etc.
They are at:
365 87th Street Daly City, CA 94015, (650) 992-0978
Here is their business card:
