Default converting a non-LSD gearbox to LSD?

Quick question:

Trying to determine what's needed to convert a non-LSD gearbox to LSD. Archives search was inconclusive. A review of PET suggests the carrier between a LSD and non-LSD are not the same.

Why you ask?

I have LSD unit that is showing some issues with the output flange. Wondering if I get a replacement (used) gearbox if I can stuff in my LSD core or if there are other internal part swaps required.

Yes, I track the car and want the LSD.

My understanding is the output flanges are integral to either the non-LSD or LSD design.

Short answer: you can swap an non-LSD in with no problem; but you can't use the non-LSD flanges on an LSD differential.

So can you add an LSD unit to a non-LSD tranny with little or no modification? Sorry to hijack.

I had that done to mine, no problems what so ever.
Back lash has to be verified so i would recommend having it done by someone used to setting up differentials.

So...the "value" of an LSD unit is not the entire gearbox itself so much as the LSD 'insert'?

And...of course a correctly setup diffy assembly as noted by Phil?

BTW, I talked to the folks at Guard the other day (who rebuild LSD unit) and they thought that R&Ring a 951 LSD unit was about $400 assuming that the 'ramps' where still usable. According to them they most always are. I thought that was pretty reasonable.

What about the heat generated by the LSD through the friction of the plates? Is a cooler necessary or can you get away without?

I ran an LSD without a cooler (as did several Previous Owners of the same car) probably 2 dozen track days.
When I had my car at the track in April the guts of the LSD disentegrated. Every gear and shaft in it broke.
I think I'll run one with a cooler now.

Update: Information from Mike at Guard.

The carrier is specific to the LSD unit. It has a special cuts, markings, pins etc that tie to the LSD unit and trigger the friction plates.
