Default Tracks & PCA near Patuxent River ?

G'day,

I'm considering a move to Pax River MD, and now I am wondering what the track driving options are (say within 3hrs of Pax.) Having only visited the DC area before I am only vaguely familiar with that part of the world. I have been out to Summit Point but I'm not aware of what other tracks are around there.

Cheers,

VIR is probably with in 3 hours. Other than that you'll only have drag racing tracks real close.

I think there are a couple of tracks opening in New Jersey.
You'll probably get a lot more responses in the racing forum.

VIR is the big one, it's about 2.5 hour drive. Summit is another good one. Occasionally they will have autocross events at Ripken stadium about 2 hours away. MIR/Budd's Creek/Potomac speedway is only a dragstrip, but it 20-30 minutes away. I think there is also a track about 3 hours away in Pennsylvania.

Let me know if you end up here in Pax River. I'm currently rebuiding my first 951, so it's not drivable yet. But I've seen 4-5 different 944s in the area lately.

Hey OZ, welcome to the area.

Expand your drive time and you have some world-class tracks at your disposal. Here are approx drive times and I'm just northwest of DC:
Summit Point (not world class but fun) 1 hour
VIR (world class) 5 hours
Watkins Glen (WC) 5 hours
Mid-Ohio (WC) 7 hours
New track in Jersey - ~1.5 (haven't gone yet)
Mosport - haven't gone but I'm guessing 7 hours
Limerock - haven't gone but I'm guessing 6 hours

Not sure how you guys get to VIR so fast. I takes me a full 5 hours (however, it's still worth the drive).
Annually, the Potomac PCA runs 3-day (Fri-Sun) events at VIR, Glen, and Mid-O, so the long drives are offset by a lot of track time.

The local Porsche club is Potomac/Founders so be sure to join the Porsche Club of America when you arrive. It gives you access to PCA driving events, which are a good bargain. Potomac is an active track-driving chapter (our Pres even frequents this board when he can't get black goo off the door of his 951) and has a cadre of outstanding instructors. Forgot to mention, the Pres is an Aussie, too, so I think we've filled our Downunder quota. Sorry, but you'll have to apply later. ;-)

You can join PCA here:
http://www.pca.org/join/
and designate Potomac/Founders as your home region.
The local chapter website is here:
http://www.pcapotomac.org/

Good luck and let us know when you get to the area.

Our Potomac Chapter DE/track chair is Alan Herod, who works at Pax River. You can email him at: DEChair@pcapotomac.org and I'm sure he'd be happy to give you some SM (that's Southern Maryland) advice!

There are some great local tracks, and a strong Porsche tracktard community here are well. Alan Herod is your man for Pax River guidance, and the fact that he is our DE Chair is an added bennie.

All the tracks that Jerome listed are heavily booked right through the summer, so there is literally more available track time than you can eat. Our club is off for a three day event at Watkins Glen in a week, so if you hurry.......

Hey Jerome, you will be pleased to hear that my black goo issue is nicely solved, and thank you for caring
