Default front crank seal and sleeve replacement

i'm curious, is it possible to remove the front crank sleeve gear without removing the oil pump? i remember it inserted all the way in so i'm wondering how to get it back out without pulling the pump. it seemed too smooth to get a good grip on. here's a photo of the part;

It might be tough, but it is possible.

Pull it.
Probably you will have a small oxidation ridge of a few thou. outside the oil seal - you will need to remove it.
You also might have raised steel on the keyway if you took a sledgehammer to that thing.

Definitely possible, as I have done it on a number of cars. Its not that hard, just take a couple of drywall screws and run them into the seal far enough to get leverage on the seal and remove it (major warning... don't screw too far into the seal as you don't want to hit anything besides seal material), and then the pump drive will slide off with relatively little drama.

Ok, I'll ask.... why do you want to remove the drive piece?

I do it as a precaution for inspection and replace them if they get a wear groove in them, as thats a common place for it to leak oil from.

yep, it's a common source of oil leaks.

If you are replacing the sleeve, channel lock pliers work too. You might want to use some scotch brite on the crank nose just to get the rust and crude off of it.

You guys are being sarcastic right?

Once you remove the front crank bolt, timing gear, balance shaft gear and woodruff key, you'll find a washer holding that green o-ring (just comes off with you're fingers).

That said, you pull off the crank o-ring and the sleeve pulls out w/o problems at all.

I was just replacing the crank seal 2 weeks ago. It involved cleaning all the contacts and wiggling the heck out of it to get it out, I did not pull it off the crank but well enough to inspect and install the new seal. One of the other members was helping me get the darn seal back in, I didn't know the collar was able to come out but it will move.

The sleeves can be very difficult to remove because there is not much to grab and they are a tight fit on the crank nose. I have a friend whose sleeve galled to the oil pump gear and the only way to get it off was to remove the oil pan and oil pump. This is very rare though, thankfully.
