Default Hood Scoop"??"

Hi,

The P/O put a hood scoop on this car ala the 924 Carrera. It will blow down on the exhaust and fuel rail. I see no benefit from it and am thinking that jamming air into and under the car is a bad thing so was also thinking that I would plate off the inlet portion of the scoop with aluminium and drill the back of it to evacuate air from under the hood. Before I do that my questions to "The 'List" are:

1. Is there any advantage to having a scoop there?

2. Is there any flaw in my reasoning?

TIA

I like the idea of having the hot air escape

Have it ducted directly to your *******. Apparently this is all the rage in F1.

And then hope something doesn't get sucked up there...

David Floyd did a nice trick with his hood, he had a hot rod shop put vents in the hood to let hot air escape - I think that would be better.

Lanny, is that a stock hood just with that scoop? If it's f/glass you could probably get someone to remove it and put in some vents as Ski suggests. I s'pose if you opened the back of that scoop it might help in the meantime.

Now there is some outside-the-box thinking! (Think about it.)

I agree with you. I'm thinking vents on both sides of the hood and both front fenders as well. This hood will only be on the car for this season at most. My green race car has much aerodynamic done underneath the body and the handling is amazing. I hope to duplicate the quality of it on this car.

It is fiberglass. With my time considerations it will have to be drilled gauge size holes for the first races this season and possibly for the whole season then I'll go with vents.

There was a pretty good thread about bonnet and other vents some time ago. Lots of good info plus a bit of theory and wild speculation. Point being that some vents will be counterproductive due to hi and lo pressure areas. I would think that you could just block that scoop off at the front in the meantime. Are the 4 924turbo vents open or closed on your nose piece? You can buy a generic vent that you could mount on the front part of the hood and with the nose vents open would encourage some flow through. Does your car have a stock i/c or larger front mount? With an aftermarket front mount you can block the flow to the radiator and having those vents opened up could help so long as there is an exit point.

The original configuration for the 924 Carrera GT and GTS had the intercooler placed over the cam cover which the hood scoop directed the air flow through the intercooler.

At Rennsport II a 924 Carrera GTR had thier scoop turned around backwards to let hot air escape since the GTR had a massive front mounted intercooler.

Is your scoop molded into the hood or is is an add-on?

Lanny,

Im not too impressed with the fitment of the headlight buckets/covers but I think the scoop is fine. If you dont want a scoop, my advice would be to get a normal hood from a parts yard and repaint it. The hoods will be cheap.

I have that hood scoop on my car, and it does allow heat to escape nicely. After a drive I can pop the hood and hold my hand around the exhaust headers. Im not kidding! I have an N/A, on a turbo, losing that heat from the headers would be counter-productive.

Dont block the airflow on that scoop as long as you have it on there imo. The engine bay is in negative pressure, and the air naturally wants to suck down in there. Blocking it will actually increase the wind resistance. You could try turning it around. That might be best until you put on a new hood!

OH! And one more thing, my car has a quicker 0-60 and 1/4 mile time than the stock N/A and can reach the same top speed Porsche rated the N/A at. Im not saying the hood scoop helps in any way- just that it hasnt seemed to significantly slow down my car either.
I have a thread with pics of my car running right now on the main 944 board, under a thread called "sharing car-meet photos" or something like that.
Good luck!
