Hey guys, Im having some trouble hunting down the problem that is causing my engine to idle and rev oddly. The car is idling high at around 1300 rpm and when warm it will repeatedly bounce between 1800 and 1300 rpm in 2 second intervals. It is VERY annoying. I have checked the vacuum system with a smoke machine and saw only one leak and fixed it to no avail. I have also replaced the idle control valve and that just made it more obvious since it was a brand new ICV. This problem will only happen when the car is warm. on cold start it idles hight (1200rpm) and then will change.
I checked the voltages that the TPS was sending and it would flunctuate between .278v and .320v. is this normal?
Any ideas on what would cause this?

wow now that you mentioned that I didnt even know you had to adjust the idle that way. I will have to try that. I read the instructions on clarks garage but dont really get it. can someone explain how to adjust the idle please. thank you!

yeah 1200 sounds like a high idle to begin with. When setting your tps you should be able to hear it click as soon as you start to turn the butterfly. IF not either your tps is bad or you have it adjusted incorrectly, which would take it out of idle mode and make it idle high and possibly jump around.

well guys I went through the Lindsey idle control directions and did all that and tried a different used (but should be good?) TPS and this is what Im left with:
with the piece of wire between the two terminals the car is constant at about 1600rpm but once the wire is taken out it starts to flunctuate. It also didnt help with lowering the idle either.

In the picture of the old and new TPS units I notice that the 2 mounting holes on these units are enlongated. Does this mean that this switch has to be clocked into a certain position for it to work correctly. Thanks.

yes the tps is clocked
spanky, go in your engine compartment, turn the throttle cam and let it come back down to rest as if you were taking your foot completly off the gas. Does the tps click when the throttle reaches the bottom of it's travel?

I would look for a leak in the vacuum hoses and tubing connections. My car behaved similarly when the blue vacuum check valve under the intake manifold broke a port and sprung a vacuum leak.

I am not sure if there is a click or not. I will do this test later today and get back to you. If the click is present in the fully closed position of the throttle then does this indicate correct TPS position. Thanks
