Default opinions on 45 vs 50 series rear tires

Hey all,

I am in a quandry. 245,45,16's are proper but have real limited selection these days as opposed to 245,50,16's What is your call. My speedo overestimates my speed as it is. A little more cush would not be bad either out back.

TIA

of info on the pro's and cons of switching but the general consensus is that 50's require a different size for the fronts as well, seems it's messes with the abs

I have run 245/50-16's on 8" and 9" wheels out back on some 944s and my 928. You get some sidewall bulge but the speedo is closer to correct and you might get some wheel lip protection. Downside: they look a little Camaro-ish. Overall I think it's an OK setup. No problems with the ABS. Generally the ABS brain calibrates the wheel speed sensors every drive to account for uneven tire wear or tire pressure, etc. it might be possible to get the ABS pissed with some really Bitchin' Camaro jacked up rear tires but the small difference in rollout with an extra 5% radius is not gonna do it.

245/45 are smaller diameter and will lower your gearing so you can accelerate faster. The 45s are a euro car tire size and the 50s are American muscle car size.

I went from 45's to 50's and my opinion on it is tha the 45's handle a little better, but mainly due to sidewall action. On a tight corner you can feel the sidewall flex on the 50's and not so much on the 45's however overall traction like street driving or straitline action is improved for sure. A little softer, and I can hook them up easier for some reason. If the car is used for DE events or lots of spirited driving then stay with 45's. I would have but I couldnt pass on the price for the BF sport's with the 50 sidewall.

I"ve run both sizes and the 50's mess up the gearing and it's not as quick off the line, etc.

Thanks for the input you guys.

I'm still on the fence with this - have a good line on 4 new Michelin 50's for $100 ea. locally. I'm running both 8's and 9's out back (clubsports) so if I pull the trigger on them, I'll post back.
