Talking 86 951 Door handle inserts needed

Hi,

I'm searching for the plastic inserts that go into the door handles for my 86 951. These are the thin black simulated woodgrain types that go on the exterior of the door handle. I can't seem to find these anywhere. Does anyone know if a VW part will fit?

Also, I need a collapsible spare. If anyone has a lead on one of these would be great! (i'm fixing up my 86, which I've owned since '92 and recentlty took out of storage, where it's been since 2002!) Just ordered cassette hinge, seals, headlight motor relays, etc, hood/hatch shocks. Just need these, floormats, a cigarette lighter and a pesky leak b/w the turbo and intake and I'm good to go! Can't wait to get this thing back to 100%!

Thanks in advance!

Also, if anyone know's where to get a replacement driver's side mirror glass would be great!

Are these aftermarket door handles, maybe of VW origin? Both my 86's do not have any plastic bits on them.

Hi Gina,

I don't think so, but am not 100% sure. These were on the car when I bought it in '92. It's one of the early ones (#283) so not sure what's up.

Sam, forget the cheesy woodgrain inserts and instead get a couple of metal inserts from a 80s-90s volkswagen.

Also Gina has a good point - all 951s came with the later handles which had no inserts. If your handles have inserts then they are early handles! But not to worry - the vw inserts will make them look better. Your junkyard might charge you $1 for two inserts.

Thanks Arash! Do you know happen to know what years/models of VW?

I was a bit dumbfounded when I looked at the parts diagrams at autoatlanta and pelican bud did see them for the 85.5MY 944. The car build date is 7/1985 on the sticker under the hood so I'm assuming it was one of the first in the US.

The car came with FUCHS (long gone, now have cup wheels).

I'll post some pics this weekend after I've fixed up the incidentals and gotten past NJ inspection.

It's an 86, not a 85/5. Only the N/A's were considered the 85/5 as they received a mid year update. The 951 was all considered an '86.

My '86 has Script handles, not sure the born on date though, I'd have to check.

The mk II volkswagens got them, I think 85-92. You don't need to buy the whole handle, just pop off the chrome trim piece! I wish I had a pic but I can't find one.

Sorry for the crappy pic. It's dark out, and I don't want to snap clearer pics. I guess if you need, I can post a better shot sometime tomorrow.

haha, yeah. I The car currently sits on the BBS', but I have a set of polished Porsche D90's and adapters for them to fit on my gti. I have Porsche script handles too, but that's just not my style to use them.
