Default Tire width choices?

I currently have Yoko ES100s 235 front/ 255 rear. I will be buying Kuhmo MX soon. I love the wide rear tire look so I want to get a bigger rear tire. My wheels are 17X8 and 17X10. I was thinking about either a 275 or 285 in the back, and either keeping the 235 or going to a 245 in the front. Will I have problems with this set up or is this too much of a stagger?

235/275 should work if you can get the right sized tires.

Your stagger will not be as great as long as you drop the profile when you increase the aspect ratio. There are tire size calculators out there that will give you overall tire diameter if you enter the tire size. If you have an ABS car keeping the tire diameters close is important.

The wider you go, the shorter the sidewal will be making your ride quality that much harsher.

There is almost no selection in 285s for a 17" wheel. The closest I could find is a 285/40/17, which is 26" in diameter. The 275/40/17 is 25.7" and I think this is even too tall.

For the front in the MX you can do either a 245/45/17 or a 245/40/17. I'd go with the shorter tire unless you're hell bent on running really tall tires.

Just go to the tire rack site and key in a few different tire sizes, and see how many choices come up. Keep in mind that choosing tire diameter is like choosing your final gearing. Engine mods that increase torque substantially (also earlier in the RPM range) can deal with (and probably should have) taller tires. Higher RPM engines will render a slight disappointment in performance with taller tires.

Yea I have the S2 R&P with the 951 5th gear so its humming at 80 mph, so I dont think a taller tire would be terrible but I dont want it to rub.

If you go to the Tire Rack Website, look in the specs page for the tire are you are considering.
it gives the measurements you need, including revs/Mi lots and lots of good info.

You should always go to Tire Rack. I just went tire shopping and realized that no matter what brand/size of tire, I couldn't find it cheaper elsewhere. Now if you want a brand that they don't have.. never mind.

Yup, know that sound. It's the only downside to the S2 R&P conversion. Otherwise it's a no brainer. So much better in general terms on road and track. I'd just love an extra cog to change up to...

Yea, I am thinking about putting in a S2 5th gear so I can stop running 4K @80mph and get back down to 3300 or 3400

My main question is will these tires rub if I go wider, and what ratio should I use to keep the rubbing from happening

I wonder if that wouldn't be too much of a jump in ratio's though?

I have the 275 Ecsta MX's in both 17 and 18" versions and they don't rub because of them being taller. As long as your offset is right the wider and .8" taller tires won't be an issue.

I'm not a big fan increasing the f/r stagger on a car that prone to understeer as it is.

Thats why I wondered if a 245 in the front would be okay

Okay please review this choice of tires:

Kuhmo MX
Front: 245/40/17
The yokos I have currently (235/45) are 25.5" in diameter, these 245's are 24.8"; A slightly shorter sidewall, but this will hopefully account for more width as well as eliminate the tiny bit of rubbing I have (turning hard and hitting a bump below 20mph makes it scrub just a tad)

Rear: 285/40/17
The yokos I have currently (255/40) are 25.1" in diameter, these 285's are 26"; I know this is almost an inch taller sidewall, but as I said earlier, I have the S2 R&P with the stock 951 5th gear so I run almost 4K at 80MPH. How much will this sidewall difference effect my RPM to MPH ratio?

Are there any problems with this set up and anything I should change? Also will it be a problem that my front wheels will be 1.2" shorter than the rear? Thanks for the help!
