Default Sponge air filter or K&N?

I was buying my silicone hoses on Siliconeintakes.com and saw these foam filters I've seen on ricers. They are very inexpensive and I was wondering if anyone here is currently using them or knows anything about them?

For another 20 bucks or so the k@n is worth the piece of mind.

the foam ones are actually pretty good. I've seen them used on JGTC cars so If they are good enough for that then I would use them on my street car.

I would say depending on the brand they are about the same. If you go with a brand like http://www.pipercross.net/ then its probably better than K&N

I would suggest a serious look before jumping on foam filters.

Ones I researched long ago flowed excellent, but were terrible at actually filtering. This is where the oiled (K&N type for example) were exceptional while keep very good flow compared to conventional filters.

It may flow great, but how would you know how well it filters until your engine wears out prematurely?
