Thanks again for the details. I should be placing my order with Vertex in the morning.

Ouch, that is a MAJOR pain in the ***.
The only way I could fix that was to get a cold chisel and bang the crap out of the bolt head until the part of the alen key would come out. Its just about usless to try and drill it out - the key is a lot harded than the bolt head and the bit will keep slipping off.

Forgot one thing...

Where do I get replacement studs? Should I replace them? I have seen many have snapped them during pump removal.
I am getting the WP mount kit from Paragon that includes bolts but not studs.

I couldn't tell if it was mentioned or not, but with the cam tower off, its a good time to do the seals at the front of the cam tower as well.

You have an '86 Turbo, so you already have the 'updated' water pump. The update was on non-turbo early cars, which was merely a turbo water pump and a block off plate for the turbo cooling outlet.

Huh? I thought the update was the oversized WP roller and the belt guide.

Am I off base here?

If its still the original part then it won't have the guard. If it is the original pump have it bronzed - its a collectors part! They usualy don't last this long!

If it is the original, would you like to buy it?

I see...... I thought all the updated water pumps were simply the turbo pump. Looks like I was wrong.

I'll have to check my '86 now, the PO replaced the pump, so hopefully it's updated. I've got the updated pump on my '83 though

Bought a cheap socket and spent less than 10 minutes on my grinder. It is now in the "special Porsche tools" drawer of my tool box.
