Why do you think Porsche put a K26/8 instead of 27/6 on the Turbo S?

Well I was hoping for some 26/8 vs 27/6 debate, but considering that they didn't even get close to what they could have out of the 26/8, maybe it just fit in easier & wasn't necessary.

K27/6 is not a official KKK product. It's something the aftermarket put together in the 90s. Back in the 80s, the 930 used the 3LDZ turbo, the K27-7200, which compressor is used for the K27/6, was used in the C2 Turbo starting 91. I'm not sure it was available in the mid 80s.

simple- more grunt up top as in on the track, less quick spool to keep cars from spinning around at low speeds- IE insurance! Ok so this is just my theory. Plus they werent going to put down more hp than the 911's- i dont think- at the time- how can you sell the faster car cheaper?

The 27/6 has clearance issues with the alternator and would require a new j-boot and coolant pipe to be made, while the 26/8 doesn't have these issues and hence costs less to stick in the cars.

leaving the moving parts of the turbo the same would result in minimal change in responsiveness and yeild the approriate hp increase they required in there conservitve tuning .
it may help feul econemy .I've seen econ improvments from reduced back pressure on other things .
Also it would involve minimal changes in the production procees .
Also they didn't want the upgrade to be obvoius .
you paid more than a house for this car your had to be convinced it was faster than the 86 by way of enchanted elvfs of the black forest mysical engineering

No it doesn't. I have an even larger 27/8 in my car, only required minimal adaptions.

i think he means factory wise- the j-boot would not have worked since the k27/8 has a 2.75" inlet OD - and it was pretty tight getting my 27/8 in clearing the intake and alternator.

The "problem" with K26/6 is not keeping boost going to redline. The Turbo S was developed from knowledge gained running the 944 Turbo cup cars. These were race cars and I believe the #8 hotside came about to give the car better higher rpm boost at the expense of a little lower end lag. Changing just the hotside meant minimal changes elsewhere.

The Turbo S was then put into production pulling bits from the Turbo cup cars of 87. The #8 hotside was part of that. In marketing terms it created a nice boost of power (30 hp) with marketable link to the racing car while still keeping power less than the 930's 282 hp. Perfect fit really.
