Default A new type of cam housing gasket?

Lindsey Racing is offering a rubber coated steel cam housing gasket for $40.

I've never seen these before. Are these new?

Yeah, says that in their description.

With all the references to gasket replacements, I figured I would have heard of these before. I must have been sleeping in class again.

Seems like a cool idea.

They've only just made them available in the past few weeks.

Think the idea is for them to hold their shape to be easier to install and not get leaks.

Default cam gasket

I am getting ready to replace my cam housing gasket with oem. Is this a poor design? Does it have a short leakless life? How many miles should I expect before needing to replace it? tia

I am getting ready to rebuild my engine as well. Would this be worth while?

I'd say give it a try, the stock one always tend to leak from either over tightening or improper alignment.

Now if they would only come up with a better gasket for the rear cam cover...

At the tech inspection for our last DE I teched 5 or 6 944's and every single one was leaking from that rear cam cover.

Make sure that you ACTUALLY have a flat surface. If the mating surface is not absolutely flat, you'll have problems either way.

Here we go. Invent a product, find a market. Why do you need to by a $40 gasket to do the job of a $13 gasket? I have replaced a ton of these things and if installed correctly it will last years and 10's of thousands of miles.

Sorry, don't see the need.

Never had a leak on a properly cleaned surface with a new gasket.

These are specificly for the solid lifters. With out a doubt there was a need for it, speaking from experience. I don't have one now but will switch to it next time I redo my lash caps. It will allow for much more precise set up of solid lifters.

If you don't have solid lifters it is a waste of time and money.

Yep, my bad. Metal gasket is for more accurate lash. However, benefit to those without solids would be easier install if you have problems keeping that sucker lined up in all the right places when slapping it back together.

Yeah, from what I understand, the stock one compresses which causes issues for solid lifters. The idea behind this is once it compresses initially, it will hold that.

I don't think $40 is a high price but believe LR have done well to design and develop a product specifically for a very limited market and bring it to us for that price. Anyone who disagrees or has no need for it doesn't have to buy it.
