Default Shift times: SSK vs. Stock linkage

In your experience, what shifts faster, SSK or stock?

My old 951's came with the short shift kit installed from the PO, but my current build started box stock. As such, I've been experimenting with both the SSK, and the stock linkage.

The SSK does a great job of shortening the throw, and providing a very positive and "notchy" shift. However, driving the car at 10/10's it seems as though the stock linkage is able to engage the gears quicker, resulting in a shorter split time. I have no empirical data to support this theory, nor a method to accurately measure the split, just a feeling.

What are your thoughts?

That's pretty much the same conclusion that I came to as well Travis. At first I loved my ssk, thinking that it was more 'race' but you have to feel your way through the gate due to the binding effect v's slamming pretty quick through the longer stock shift. I am thinking that the best result is just one of those shorter gearknob/handles. I've used one of these and they 'feel' shorter & pretty good.

I've just completed my second track day with the SSK installed and I don't thinks there's any difference in shift speed. It just feels less like you're driving a truck.

Agreed on the above. Feels notchy, but positively engaged. I keep thinking it will loosen up, but no luck as of yet and it prob. won't.

Patrick- You described it perfectly. Have you tried the Kokeln or LR shift lever? I have a custom shift rod designed to further reduce the throw, when used in conjunction with one of these levers. It should be closer to the SSK in throw, but have the stock smoothness and speed. I'll let you know how it goes.

I dont know,I've always hated the feeling of sloppy shifters.Whats a good brand of SSK?

Huh, I wonder what kind I have. David installed one for me and it's even angled at about 5% towards the driver to make it even faster. I love it. Too bad it's going with the tranny when I sell it. I'm gonna miss it.

It felt more precise to me. Just as easy to get into gear and with the angle of the shifter pointed more towards me, it's freaking fast! When I went to Bondurant High Performance Driving School, they said I was one of the fastest hand eye coordinated shifters they'd seen in a long time. I think it had a lot to do with my shifter. Too bad I wasn't as good on the track. Racing really takes a lot of skill.

The old autothority shifters seem to be the best and the fastest shifting from what I have seen. Everything else I have tried (transaxle mounted anyway) has been notchier and slower. sh944 has Lindsey's shift lever which I really liked the feel of. If it fit my 993 shift ****, I would have one, but it only works on the momo style round ***** it appears.

Karl, give me a call tomorrow. I may have a product idea for you...

FWIW, I absolutely love the Lindsey unit, altho I made a few changes to it to suit me, and have shortened the gear shift **** part and threaded it to so that the **** screws on rather than slip fits, and have also done some work with mylar shims to make it fit to my preference. Well worth the money, imo.

sh944, do you have any problems with the shift **** rattling? My 951 came with a shortened stock shift rod and aftermarket ****..the vibration drove me nuts.

I put my old 944Racing shift linkage on my 951. I loved the feel on my n/a, but it for some reason dosent feel the same as it did on my n/a. The stock linkage and shortened rod did have a nice feel, just that vibration rattling was terrible. Perhaps the LR shift lever is the best solution.

This is exactly what I wish to do. May I ask what you used to thread the shaft, Scott? Do you have any photos?
