Do the findanza(Sp?) flywheels have a OT mark?? I see the notch on the camshaft sprocket through the hole on the distributor housing cover but no OT mark on the flywheel??
Am I doing something wrong?
(Im just starting to remove the belts and rollers to replace them but I want to make sure this step is 100% correct)

Pull out the first sparkplug and use a long 1/4 extension or a dull screwdriver to check if the pistion is at the top. You can rotate the crank to find about where TDC is to make sure your not 180' off.

so no mark around where the starter would be and no mark through the hole on top of the clutch housing..... Is the mark through the distributor housing relevant at all?? It should be close to TDC now correct?? And just pull the plug on 1 to get it exact?

A small, 12 - 18" wooden dowell from the local hardware store works well for the spark plug trick.
I still don't understand why Fidanza doesn't do more on marking the flywheels.

even pulling the spark plug isn't exactly accurate and you have a few degrees of rotation before the piston starts to move in the other direction. Are you using a flywheel lock? If so, set your marks using the cam gear notches, lock the flywheel, and start working as usual and make sure everything is in it's right place b4 reassembly.

I am using a flywheel lock. Does it matter if its a few degrees off with the lock in place?? Also ST was saying the check the balance shaft as well. Where exactly do I check (First time doing the timing belts so its prob going to take me 10+ hours
with crap like this happening)

I think he was referring to play in the shafts themstelves. After you get the belts off, give the shafts a wiggle up and down, then in and out checking for excess play. Damn..... sounds funny going back and re-reading that...

Opps yeah use a wooden dowel as Ski stated rather than something metal, I wasn't thinking when I posted. I had the same issue so I have a rubber coated metal pole I used. I found TDC best I could with the spark plug hole then lined up the cam gear on the mark. After the I put the flywheel lock and everything worked out just fine.
The balance shaft have marks but are on the backside of the pulleys, doesn't help when it's still assembled.
