Nurburgring VLN 24 hour Race - 928 S/C or 951

This is very interesting. Is there anyone around here with 951 endurance racing experience? The engine would have to be pretty stout to go 24 hour, NTM the rest of the car. How do you plan on rationing out brakes? Quick-change calipers?

Paul, if you ever revisit the idea of a 951 endurance racer please let me know. I think if four guys pitched in it could be done without driving anyone going into bankruptcy! To me smart motorsport is cheap motorsport (if such a thing can possibly exist!).
I'm developing my road car to be a nice road & trackday machine. The 'Ring is really the other inspiration behind having a 951. I want to be able to drive down to the 'Ring or Spa with a few mates, have a great long weekend of driving & then bring the whole rig back to Blighty in one piece! To get four blokes together to run a 951 in Britcar or another endurance race would be an extension of this - the next step up.Those blokes in the 500 SEC encapsulate the corinthian spirit & joie de vivre I really admire!
The beauty of it is that endurance racing rewards mechanical sympathy, consistency & patience. These can go a long way to compensating for a small budget - the hare & the tortoise!
Cheers,
Tim

Paul, it's the ADAC 24 hour series that the Derichs Mercedes 500 SEC races in.
At the following link you'll see that they came in a very galliant 113th out of 141 finishers in the ADAC Nurburgring 24 hours.
http://www.heicosportivna.com/nextsh...d=287&fkt=open
This is the sort of event for which a 951 could be prepared.
Apparently in the 2005 Britcar they came in under the Safety Car because the driver was feeling "cold!" Awesome!

in a 24 hour race you don't "hotlap" hence padwear is much longer, and you ofcourse use real racepads. the track is also very gentle on the tires compared to other tracks.
I know there is atleast 1 951 in vln, but if you find the list of contenders you can probably get a list of other older cars as well.
buddy came in 7'th total in a 24hour recently
not bad for a diesel car...

I think mine has more race miles that any race car with its original engine.
so far 91 race days and no issues (besides a defective water pump and a defective cam sprocket ) no dnfs, all that has been done is tires, brakes and oil changes. Not even an alignment in 6 years.
thats like doing the 24 hour of Lemans, 3-4 times back to back!
I dont think a blower or a 944 turbo would be able to be as reliable.

I've seen 951's on the VLN, but never 928's. you really really need to test it before you try lasting 24 hours.
have you also read your class rules?
we have been contemplating putting a team togheter ourself, but so far it's only thoughts. I however know both audi/bmw drivers and it seems like a blast.
everything on my 951 is rigged with this track alone in mind![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Funny you should start about building a 928 / 951 VLN race car...
You cannot run a supercharged or turbo-ed 928 - the displacement restriction is 6.2ltrs NA and the coefficient for forced induction is 1.4. However:
I have just finished building a 928 VLN race car. It's based on a 1990 LHD GT. The specs are as follows:
1. Drivetrain:
Engine: New 928 GTS 5.4ltr engine with 968 intake valves, 928GT cams, intake spacers,928Intl headers, custom exhaust, dry sump, re-map - should see easy and reliable 420bhp
Gearbox: New 928 GTS 5spd with a short shift and a front mounted Mocal cooler
Suspension: 2-way adjustable LEDA coilovers. 1000/750 springs and Nurburgring valving
Brakes: 928GTS Big Blacks with Carbopads
Wheels: 18x11 and 18x9 O.Z. Racing for Strosek
2. Interior:
Seats: Cobra Monaco S FIA approved
Harnesses: TRW 6-point FIA approved
Rollcage: Fabricadge custom 6-point cage FIA approved
Fire Suppression System: Lifeline 2000 Mechanical fully plumbed in FIA approved
Electrical: Kill switch FIA approved
Windows: All in Lexan except the winscreen
General: Soundeadening and insulation removed
Exterior:
Mirrors: 928 GTS cup mirrors
Weight: 1350kg without fuel and driver as per the regulations
Looking for drivers to form a VLN/Britcar/Youngtimer team to race in 2008, with the ultimate goal to participate in the 24hrs in 2009. I think the car should be able to compete reasonably well in the SP8 class. The 928 should be able to turn in a sub 10min lap for the VLN course - the car was very fast at the Ring even in standard form. I would expect a top 50 finish if nothing goes wrong, which of course it will happen.![ooops](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon501.gif)
One other thing that you guys forget - the race takes its toll not just on the car but on the drivers too - a 928 is a much easier car to drive fast than a 944 for a longer period of time. Then again if it rains...
Let's keep this discussion going! The car comes with a spare GT engine in great condition - 30,000 miles since rebuilt and a reasonable GT gearbox.
Alex
P.S. Anders, there is no age limit on the cars in the 24hrs
