Simon,

As a driver of a 400+/- hp 944T, I do wonder what it would be like to have ABS / Launch control / traction control / 4wd. But that usually just on wet days.

I agree about the feeling in the corners, especially when you have upgraded springs & wide tires.

Best part about the power is taking other 944T owners for a drive. There jaw just drops & POW they are addicted.

Its also fun to take out corvette & subi STI owners and watch there jelousy.

Thanks for the comparison.

My goal is to have a 996 Turbo in the next 4 years. Glad you shared your thoughts on the two cars. I won't be selling one for the other thats for sure..

Even spending a fortune on my car which will eventually lead to some BIG numbers, I still wouldn't be able to afford a 996tt in this country. They sell for over $150k here,... still!

I have driven both along with just about every other model Porsche. I have yet to drive a 997TT or a 904(still hoping), but I can agree that a 500hp 996TT is a entirely new species. It's not a car by any rational standards, it's a beast. A true terror to physics in the proper hands. That said, I do prefer the feel of a 951 much better. 951's have a nice balanced feel. At just about any speed I always have plenty of warning before the front or rear is about to give out. In a 911 style it takes a completely new driving technique and years of practice to push this car.

I like to say the 911 style cars have all wheel steering. You use the steering wheel as meerly a suggestion on where you would like the car to go, then the actual "steering" comes from your right foot.

Nice thread... can't resist adding my .02 - I owned a nicely modded 951 that could smoke 90% of the cars on the road. She drove like a dream - one of the few cars that felt more like you were wearing it like a suit when driven in anger.
However, my best friend took me out in his 997TT last week and there aren't enough adjectives to describe the combination of grip, stability, braking and carrier launched, nuclear missile like power - he was saying how it felt like GOD was shoving you forward and I laughed at the comparison until I experienced it firsthand. Next to the 951, it's like something from another planet. Given a choice, I would take both. The 951 has it's qualities - a certain feel that even the mighty 997TT can't match. But .... to be able to put down 500lb/ft of torque without even thinking about it is magical. Every 951 owner should sample what Porsche is doing with the modern models - don't believe everything that you read - see it/feel it first hand. And yes, I did squeeze the crap out of the hand grip on the door and probably would have screamed if my chest wasn't compressed into the seat and my mouth not rippling with the G forces.

The Brotherhood is Porsche - not model specific, well that's how I feel. :-)

My Specialist had an interesting comparison between the 993TT 996TT and 997TT. He said the 993TT was quite raw and unsophisticated and even though it wasn't as powerful or fast as the 996TT it felt it. The 996TT in his view was very refined and it's true pace was masked by whisking you along in a very refined cocoon. He said that the 997TT is very much a return to the 993TT style in terms of power delivery. In his words he said you floor it and "It just blows your head off". Fabulous cars all of them but I've still got some playing to do with the 951 while I wait for depreciation to sink it's teeth in a bit more!

As it should be. I love them all! I'd have a Cayenne, 924, 912, 914 or any other in a heartbeat! If they wear the crest they are Porsche. Period!

The mechanic told me that there aren’t a lot of jobs where engine doesn’t have to be dropped out on these cars. Ok, I am going to stop now, I am starting to feel quite ill just thinking about it. :-).
Yeah you have to remove taillights, rear bumper cover, intercoolers/ducts, some sheet metal, and the coil packs to get to the spark plugs. The engine/trans drop isn't horrible, maybe a bit more involved than a 951, has some fussy plastic hoses/quick connectors that make the job more annoying. I can't see too many DIYers tackling these cars, especially since you need the PST2 scan tool too properly diagnose so much of it.

Great comparison between the two cars though. I work on Porsches for a living so I have driven pretty much every one ever made, and I own a 951 and I can see what you say. The 996TT is an amazing car, but a bit detached, almost too easy to go ridiculously fast in. The torque and minimal turbo lag are amazing, though. This is especially apparent in a Tiptronic car. Tips start out in 2nd gear in auto mode, and therefore most NA 911s w/ Tip feel like dogs off the line---not the 996TT though, it will rocket off the line starting in 2nd! We work on a good number of modded 930s w/ bigger turbos, they probably make close to the hp of a stock 996TT but feel much faster (and scarier!) when the boost hits since there is so much more lag and the big single turbo hits harder. It depends on your preference. I prefer the more raw feel of earlier cars, but I don't think there is any car made that could get from point A to point B across the country faster, regardless of conditions, than a 996TT (well, except a 997TT).

I love my 951, even if some of our customer cars make it feel slow sometimes!

It will be interesting when a few of the 951 project cars come up with 500+ hp. I suspect that they will be a total handful too. The tech advances in something like a 996tt are in the brakes, suspension, chassis, and of course all the electronic gadgetry. 700hp+ 951's won't lie down to anything but they will have to have all their other components thoroughly sorted.

I think getting the power to the road is a big issue too... with all the weight in the back and 4wd the 996TT and 997TT have a distinct advantage in that regard. Problem is, a new 997TT costs around three times the price here as it is in the US.
