Default OPRV question

I just was searching for possible reasons for my troubles...

I'm using an 86 block with parts coming from an 87 (including oil cooler housing/ oprv) - when I put it all together I took this metal sleeve that slides into the block (for the oprv) out of the 87 block and put it into the 86. I then installed the 87 oprv. Is this correct??

You MUST use an 86 OPRV with an 86 block. Same as you must use an 87 OPRV with an 87 block. IIRC I thought the sleeve was in the 86 block, not the 87. You can swap the oil housings but NOT the OPRV from block to block. Unless you are swapping 87+ OPRVs. But the 86 vs 87+ are different.

mike, You have me all confused because I am doing the same thing (exact opposite) and my 86' block has the sleeve and my 87+ block is sleeveless. I have been told (and read) that you don't touch the sleeve(good thing I couldn't even get mine out) but it's all about the oprv. The 87+ oprv should be made for a sleeveless block and the 86 oprv should be made for the 86 block with the sleeve. Can you confirm what you said in your post, your 86 block should be the one with the oprv sleeve. Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the responses...

The 86 block I bought didn't have anything in the oil cooler area.. no oil housing, oprv, etc so I don't have any of that stuff the engine was mostly stripped. so I don't know orginally went there, if you guys say 86 had the sleeve, I believe you

The engine I'm referring to as "87" came out of my 87 951, but doesn't have anything on it indicating it was built in 1987.

The "87" block has a 1982 date stamped on it and had "motorsport" pistons in it. It had the sleeve in the oil housing. I don't remember if it was a 1 or 3 piece valve.. I did my n/a oil cooler seals around the same time I put the turbo engine together. What I'm getting at is I don't really know if the block is orginal to my 87 car.

Would using a 1 piece valve in a block not designed for it cause no oil pressure?

edit:the more I think about it, I'm pretty sure it had a 1 piece, but won't know for sure until I take it out..

Wow. You've completely lost me. Back to square one. Do you not have oil pressure? What is the problem here? What are you trying to do with all this talk? lol.

Let me be as clear as possible.

86 block has the 'sleeve' for the OPRV pressed? into the block.
Don't confuse the double o-ringed cylinder that goes in between the cooler housing and the block with the 'sleeve' in the 86 block.
86 OPRV (3 piece or 1 piece) does not work in an 87 block and visa versa.
The oil housings swap between blocks.

In short the OPRV's <86 and 87> are different lengths, different diameters, and different O-rings. As DDP says you have to use the OPRV matched for the block. The 86-87+ cooler housings for the 951 are the same. If you use the wrong OPRV you will either have no oil pressure or it will peg and blow the oil filter off depending on which way you screw up.

I do not have oil pressure.

i bought a short block out of a 86 951 . It did not have anything other then the oil pan on it, so I didn't see any difference between the old and new when when I put it together. I was also not aware that the 87+ OPRV would not work in a 86 block.

The reason I'm not sure about which OPRV I have installed is because the block out of my old engine has a build date of 1982. It also had a metal sleeve (with no o-rings or grooves) in place on the block where the OPRV slides in to.

The old engine was rebuilt before it was blown, but has a build date of 1982.

All of this leads me to believe I may have installed the updated early 1 piece OPRV.

I think there is a length different for the updated 86 1 piece OPRV compared to the 87+ OPRV. Am i
wrong?

sorry if its a bit confusing, sometimes i don't proof read and i get sidetracked

appriecate the help

got me by a minute steve, thats what I was trying to figure out.. I was thinking out loud about the possibiltiy of me unknowingly installing the updated early oprv.

either way I have to remove it , so does anyone know what the length of the updated 1 piece valve is?

Mike,

Anyway you can post a picture of the sleeve you are talking about? DDP has it correct with the 86/87+ differences.

Last, I've only done a 86 but since the 86 block is sleeved wouldn't it be too tight for the 87+ OPRV?
