My 87' 951 has a non-LSD tranny.
But the last three launches i've done the car has kicked out hard to the side when i engage second. (i cannot full throttle in first due to power) I've confirmed my car does not have LSD when it was on jackstands.
I've read that both wheels receive power if the traction is the same, but once one starts to spin then the power all goes to that wheel (in non-LSD trannys)
Is this correct?
Why is my car suddenly acting like it has LSD? I'm not complaining just wondering. (This is on dry roads i should add)

Well sir, There are several mechanical ways to accomplisching the "limited slip" in an LSD but the idea is a device inside the tranny which will limit the rotation of one half axle to approx. the same rotation of the other. In theory both wheels get an equal percentage of power. What you are experiencing with a solid even launch on a non-lsd is an equal breaking of the traction on both tires.. also known as luck or a very controlled environment.

i just went out at lunch & did some testing.
On dry pavement my car continues to grab with both wheels but only in a strait line.
If i break traction when turning only one wheel spins ( i assume the outer wheel)
I put one wheel off the road in sand & one wheel on the asphalt & only the wheel in the sand spun.
So, it looks like when there is equal traction both wheels will break free & luck has a lot to do with it.

Generally on non LSD equipped cars the inside wheel spins when turning. This is because the weight transfer unloads the inside usually causing massive wheel spin and sometimes oversteer which can be unpredictable.

If both wheels break traction at the same time and you keep your foot on the gas then the momentum and inertia of the wheels will keep them both spinning so long as the inertia can keep overcoming the grip.

When you turn, the inner wheel should spin. It is travelling the shorter distance and the outer wheel is dictating how fast the rear wheels will be spinning, not the inner. Thus, the inner wheel loses traction and spins faster.

So if the you have the rear of the car on jack stands and both wheels spin at the same time, does this mean the tranny has LSD? Or do both wheels of an LSD and non LSD equipped car spin? I've always heard to use this method to find out if a 944 came with LSD, not to just look at the options sticker. Input?

Buy an LSD and then you'll know what you have!

Also, what if you have an LSD car, and have it on jack stands.. if you hold one wheel and try to spin the other? Should you be able to turn one and hold the other in a LSD car?
