Default engine not returning to idle... SOLVED update, page 2

Ok when I let off my gas pedal I am getting this intermittent failure of the engine to return to idle with no gas, applied. It will sit at around 1400 to 1500 RPMs and a quick tap (or two) on the gas pedal is required to get it to drop back to idle. It does not feel like a stuck or sticking throttle cable but that could be it.

Where do I start looking to trouble shoot this?

shoot if this were carbureted I'd tell you to increase your idle jet b/c you're too lean...

Seriously tho, does it feel like a stuck throttle? You'll be able to feel it in the pedal if you're throttle's stuck open.

Doesn't feel like a stuck cable which is the worrisome part. It does this on deceleration and stopped in neutral.

Ok spool me up on the speed reference sensors.

Ahhhh see if it is actually getting the signal to the DME that the car is in "idle." Ok this might sound silly? Is it a simple ohm check? If so what pins are what?

TPS. When mine went bad, the car consistently idled at 1900 rpm.

Check TPS, TB return spring or a vacuum leak!

Glad you posted - I've got a similar problem. When warm, my car will idle a bit high. When driving - say 4th gear - and I let off....it sometimes wants to jerk bcz the RPMs are not coming down. I don't have a vacuum leak, I know my throttle is not sticking (took it apart and it's all sorts of smooth now)...so it's gotta be a sensor of some kind.

My TPS is adjusted properly....but I guess that doesn't mean it's working???

Ok I went out and checked the TPS and it seemed to be right on the cusp of clicking on and off at the IDLE position so I messed with the screws and this seems to have solved the problem. I will take it for a drive in the morning to to see. My theory is that when the engine bay was warmed up it was just enough to cause the TPS not to engage properly.

THANKS ALL ! ! !

I smoke tested my intake yesterday and found the Throttle body leaking like a SOB. Guess I know what's next! It's causing my idle to be 1000-1200 rpms all the time.
