Default M030 Brake Upgrade Question (Big Reds, 965 Rotors, Late Offset Suspension)

Does anybody have direct experience using M030 steering knuckles with 965 (C2 Turbo) rotors using Big Red calipers on a late offset (87+) suspension?

Will the calipers and rotors align properly without spacers/adapters?

Thanks,

TonyG

You might try "boost feen" - I think he is running a similar setup on his 968.

There are a few in the UK that have replaced the whole hub and steering knuckle with the late turbo cars and big blacks with 964 rotors and have had no problems at all. It's a straight bolt off/bolt on replacement.

I use the adaptors as the hubs and knuckles are very rare - i've been looking for two years for a pair without any success! but there seems to be no problems with the early hub/adaptor setup i've currently got.

Confusing. The M030 spindles and hubs are exactly the same as the Turbo S cars with the 928S4 calipers. In fact all 951's post '87 were turbo S's. They were in the UK at least.

On Pre Turbo S cars the M030 package included the uprated front brakes, however on post '87 cars M030 was just the suspension components as the 928S4 brakes were standard. Is this different in the US?

That's not the case in the US. Yes MO30 and TurboS are the same. But Only 89's were all TurboS. Unfortunately for us the 89's were the last year, and we didn't have the Turbo Cabs only the S2's from 89 to 91.

The 964/965 Turbo calipers bolt right on. I had a pair plus the matching rotors. Th rotors are the 322mm or thereabouts, and the calipers are the same as TurboS except they have extra metal to stand the calipers off. You can't use the TurboS brake shileds at they interfere, and you have to have at least 17" wheels to clear, other than that they are a direct bolt on. In my opinion they are a graet upgrade as the braking radius is something like 10% further out plus they cool better. The downside is the discs are heavier, and are very expensive compared to TurboS, which are a lot more expensive than regular Turbo.

I would have kept them except I like to use 16" wheels for the street as it softens the ride and tires are so much cheaper. Plus the rotor price put me off.

Thanks guys,

The M030 knuckles can use the 965 (turbo C2... which is the Big Red), and the 965 drilled one piece rotors with no problems.

The dust shield rubbed at the tie rod point, but I removed them, so it's a non-issue.

I just wasn't sure of the alignment, and I had to get a car setup for the track with zero time to verify everything.

FYI, the 965 (turbo C2) and the GTS (same size as the 965, but non-drilled) bolt straight up with zero mods on a M030 steering knuckle.

The 993TT two piece drilled rotor also bolts on, but requires a different center to get the correct offset.

All three above are MUCH larger in diameter than the stock 951 M030 rotor (big difference). And while the pad width is the same as the S4/951 M030 caliper as the the Big Red caliper (aka 965 caliper and almost -identical 928 GTS caliper) AND the caliper piston sizes are the same, the pad height is much bigger to work with the larger diameter rotor.

In the end, the bigger setup worked perfectly today.

I'm just glad it all bolted up, or I would have had to put all the M030 stuff back on.

PS> the M030 rotors/pads/calipers are going on the classifieds next week if anybody wants that setup
