Default "Clack clack clack" coming from left rear wheel

This problem is only intermittent, and when it does happen, will only make the sharp "knocking" or tapping when accelerating. At cruising or decel (regardless of speed), no sound can be heard.

Bad halfshaft? I can't imagine it's the bearing; I've never heard a bearing "tap" before. Could the halfshaft be misaligned?

What should I check, and then after checking, what should I replace?

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad CV joint. Remove it and flip it over (i.e. reverse it's direction) and reinstall. Make sure there's grease in there.

A good grease repack should clear it up. It's a pretty quick and easy job.

You'll need an 8mm cheesehead socket. If you can't find one around, let me know - I've got one at home.

Do you mean flip it over lengthwise, then? i.e. what was initially mated to the tranny is now mated to the upright?

dime, thanks for the offer. I know I don't own one, but I think I should be able to get one. The boots are in fine condition and are not leaking at all... I'll get in there and repack it then as well.

Our CV joints are notorious for losing grease with no trace of where it went.

Collin, Sears occasionally carries them. I had to call my Snap-On dealer friend to get mine.

Sounds exactly like what happened to my car back in 2005 -- for me it was my half shafts needed to be replaced. Actually I think you can just flip them to avoid buying new ones.

Cool thanks guys; I'm going home in about an hour to turn the halfshaft over and repack it. Hopefully there're no pieces floating around there!
