Best form of reading Knock??
What is the consensus on reading knock? Is there an add on gauge that reads straight off the Motronic? What scale is there and therefore what is good, bad, and ugly? Apexi makes a unit that replaces the brain for other cars and among other things this reads knock directly from the stock sensors. You can then see what's happening with changes you make. Not saying that you should tune to the edge of knock and then just dial it back a smidge, but it seems to me that we fly blind with this very important factor. Unfortunately they don't make one for our cars, but is there something that we can rig up that gives us a true read rather than the stethoscope type things that probably pick up phantom noises?

There's a thread bout this Patrick... there's a particular digital display some of the guys are using. As i understand it, they lust hook it up to the diagnostic port under the dash tnat corresponds to terminal 15 of the KLR and it then gives them a cumulative total of any knock events - so it gets it direclty from the KLR itself - ie, what the KLR interprets as knock.
I would expect that Porsche would have spent a bit of time and $ with Bosch tuning in the KLR for our specific vehicles so that it accurately detects knock and filters out other noise. I think the problem with other methods bypassing the KLR would be that, without the benefit of that R&D, how would you know how accurate it was and that you were correctly filtering out other noise? From what I understand, this is particularly problematic at higher engine speeds.
How did you get on with your weekend diagnosis?

I find your own ears are best. I have friends that have tested a $1400 electronic knock detection tool and you could audibly ear the knock inside the car before the tool picked it up. Link do make the knock block, which plugs onto the stock knock sensor and you can plug headphones into it and a gauge if you want. My flatmate is a Link dealer by the way...

Ideally you want a system that ignores low-load knock, thus giving you a better picture to tune with. My system does not record knock until two parameters are met: TPS position > 30%, and RPM > 2000.
