Default Manual steering question....

Anyone know if the manual rack from an early 924 will work on a later car. I know the tie rods would need changed out, but what about the rack itself?

i think the ratio is different, and I'm not sure the splined shaft of the 924 rack is in the same position as the 944 rack.

I'm 90% sure they are the same rack. I know an 83 944 Manual rack is a direct swap onto any other 944. All you need is the rack and the shaft (the manual one is longer), and tie rods and you are good to go.

I'd assume the 924 rack is the same as the one on the 944, so it should bolt right up.

They are not the same...Part number for 924 rack is 477.419.101a. and the 944 rack is 944.347.011.00. The 924 rack has solid mounts instead of rubber, although in the same location. The pinion shaft is also shorter on the 924 rack.

Kevin,
I was looking at PET for the part numbers but you already have them, and yes they are different. Have you gotten the racks from Ed yet to compare?

Yes, that's why I'm trying to figure out if they will work or not. I guess the big question would be what intermediate shaft I would use given the splined shaft is shorter. Ready to part the '83?

hmm... so the 924 rack is a 477 #? Is it by any chance a VW or Audi part?
Also... is it just me or would the 924's solid mounts be preferred to the 944's rubber mounts?

Yes if it means I get a manual steering rack out of the deal and I don't have to list stuff for sale.

Man, I'm cheap labor. What do you think the record time could be for tearing one down?

How about 4 days? 4 hrs per day worked, 16 hours with breaks?

I say cut that in half. Not nearly as much to take off of an early car, plus no turbo stuff to fuss with.
