This was posted in OT a few days ago. Apparently it was a prototype and all prototypes get crushed anyways. Still a waste though. I'd drive a prototype if you gave me one.

Didn't know that. Makes sense, can't guarantee quality on a prototype. But i bet its hard, even for the guys operating the crusher.

we were just talking about this the other night. My bud works for Audi and he went to Michigan for training. He said they train everyone on a set of new Audis w/ xxxxxx for vin numbers, then crush them when they are done. Sad.

I work for a BMW dealership, and our training is done on cars that are legitimate production models. They get taken apart and put back together hundreds of times. When the training centers are done with them, they are certified by BMW NA and sold to the public and Certified Pre Owned. Most of the cars will not have more than a couple hundred miles on them. I recently saw a 2001 E38 750IL sell on Ebay that was a training vehicle. It was sold as a brand new car and carried the same warranty as a new one. It's interesting how different manufacturers do things.

I know BMW scraps all of their preseries and Vor lauf. cars. We are building a couple X6's per day right now but none of them have VIN's so they will all be scrapped once the testing and evaluation has been completed.

I bet you do your training through BMW North America. They have to buy their cars from BMW MC that might have something to do with it.

The employee car program for the BMW employees here at the plant is all through BMW NA and once the employee puts 8000 miles on the car they get a new one. Thier old car goes to auction. My sister drives a E46 that was an ex-employee car.

Which auction do they use? I have several contacts with dealers licenses and would like to be able to bid on these. Is it thru Manheim? There are always lots of BMW's at Manheim's Manheim location.

Well the idea of "Modern Art" is to make you have a feeling because of the work. In this case....

Lol, even worse is that it is a 997 Twin Turbo, not a 993.

Do you just want to kill people sometimes? If it is a prototype it was probably done by porsche. In the early 90s porsche did the same to a successor to the 959 prototype and I just when it was in the back of a truck people could figure out what it was by its rims and porsche was mad.

I saw that 2001 BMW 750 on ebay! I was wondering why it was being sold as "new".

In Europe prototypes are crushed due to tax reclaim. A manufacturer may have reclaimed millions of Euros/£ to build a prototype. If that prototype was to be registered the VAT would become due and therefore the car could cost the manufacturer easily over a million. Hence they crush the car to protect their finances. I do not believe that this one was a prototype as it had actual german registration plates on and not trade plates. Very sad!
