Default How do you tell that rear wheel bearings are bad? ::TIME SENSITIVE::

Hey guys,

My dad hears a sound from the rear right wheel. He describes it as sounding like tires off a lifted truck when you're next to it with your window down. Is this my rear wheel bearing? He hasn't had it above 50mph...if my wheel bearing is bad, then my trip to get the car this weekend is screwed...please tell me it's the tire! The car made no noise what so ever when he drove it to the body shop, then after they fixed some small details, it started making the noise on the way home.

Lift that side of the car up. Secure. Push / Pull on top of wheel. It WILL move if bearing is bad. My drivers side is starting to "wiggle" Hasn't made any noise yet.

I could hear the bearings click as I rolled the car in the driveway. They were completely shot.

Yeah, check for some play as 950NE said. There should be none. It's hard to tell by sound alone sometimes but what you hear could be a wheel bearing.

So judging by my description (I know it was a poor one) would you draw the conclusion that my wheel bearing is bad? (strictly basing your conclusion on my description, I'm doing the same because I'm nowhere near my car)

Not with certainty, but it does sound likely. Is there anyone qualified around that could check it out for you? Does he feel any vibration?

CV joints are a common source of speed dependent noise in these cars and in my experience wear out before the bearings. Do a search but also look under the car for evidence of a torn boot, grease everywhere.

lift it up- if it feels loose the bearing is shot. We had one go on the 924s and it was realllly loose. I put a new bearing in. Ive seen others that made noise for awhile before they went out-some just made noise.

My dad is qualified, He's just busy adjusting the balance shaft belts after he realized he had the lower pulley 180 deg off...common I heard. He mentioned he still heard that noise he heard when driving it home from the body shop. The car has only been driven twice since the noise started, and it seems to have started for absolutely no reason at all...grrr...

Tires off a lifted truck? ....

Bad wheel bearings will make a grinding noise/vibration through the car. The grinding will be worse when that side of the car is loaded (cornering).

Whats the mileage on the car? Rear wheel bearings on a street car will last a long time. Track cars go through them quite a bit faster.

If your cv's have never been greased they will also cause a grinding noise from the rear end. You need to take them off anyway if you do the wheelbearings so you might check them first. On my old race car this happened, I pulled them off and re lubed them. They were completely dry. Noise went away.

Thats for sure. I've only ever had issues with front wheel bearings, and the noise was much worse under braking and cornering, thats how I was able to determine it.

Like stated above, the sound should change when swerving left and right. Check your tire pressure. What kind of tires are you running and how new are they? The Yokohama ES100's that came with my 951 were so loud that it sounded like a wheel bearing, except the sound didn't change when the suspension was loaded.

If the car was sitting for some time, you will have rust on the rotors. Sound like you havn't driven it enough to clean them up. It could be that some water or chemicals got on the rear rotor making it worse. Since it didn't have this noise before it went into the shop, I would take it for a good drive with lots of braking.

The sound of a bad bearing does sound like a tire noise, but so does a bad tire.

Thanks for the input guys. My dad made no mention of the noise changing while turning or anything, and he said that it was not a grinding. He is going to pull the wheel off probobly tonight and see what it looks like. The tires are fairly new Falkens. Anyone had issues with them before?
