Default Homemade Steam Vent kit: Advice . . .

I want to put in a steam vent kit, but i cannot afford $65 w/ shipping for 2 connections & a hose. (Sorry LR)

I've read that few of you have built your own.

Any advice on which hose to use? & where to get it?

Are brass fitting OK to use, or is steel a better choice?

thanks, Jake.

I have used PEX tubing in plumbing applications before. It is flexible and high heat resistant, but not very UV resistant. I am not sure if that is what LR uses, but when I opened my kit that is what it looked like. I don't know if this helps or not.

25.00 extra bucks for such a critical component is affordable IMHO. Get what you already know works. This isn't the time to skimp.

On the same note. I just bought a LR kit with the 'T' fitting in a sealed bag from a local guy that sold his car. Are there supposed to be instructions with this kit? I know where to tap the head but instructions would sure help. The fitting looks like an NPT. To me this means I should tap the hole in small steps, test fit, tap some more, until the fitting is snug. If you keep tapping all the way without test fitting the hole will be too large and leak. If someone has the instructions I would appreciate it.

Thanks

MIne didn't come with instructions per se. But I did get a set of pics from Dave illustrating where to tap, etc. I'll go look for them now.

Find yourself a Parker Store.

Get two 90 degree "Presto-lok" fittings that swivel - 1/4" NPT will work.

Get a 1/4" NPT "T" fitting and two barbed hose fittings.

Get about 5-6 feet of high temp 1/4" nylon tubing - Parker Paraflex hose.

Drill and tap a hole at the back, upper corner of the head. There's enough info floating around here to let you know where to drill. Route the nylon hose as you see fit. Finally, splice into the small coolant tank hose and install your "T" fitting AND YOU'RE DONE!

Nice little upgrade if you've got the head off - cheap and easy.

Jake, I've got a bunch of the nylon hose, so if you're not able to get a 5-6' section I can hook you up.

I am going to have to agree with you Elliot. He has a lot of money in this car, and that is a tiny investment by comparison. I had one on my other car, and it was a sound (inexpensive) investment for what it can do, and yes is proven too. Anyway that's just my 2 pennies.

If i was really smart i'd put my 951 up on blocks, but i'm not, so i'll keep her going on a buget.
