Thumbs down Zeitronix

I went to tidy up the wires for the DME/KLR and decided to start the car to while I was under there to make sure everything was kosher. Well, she started but ran terrible! Bellowing black smoke and just barely sputtering to stay alive. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong, everything was connected and the wires looked fine.

So, I decided to plug in the laptop and record the event. I thought it would give me some clues.

I plug in the laptop, open up Zeitronix, and start capturing data... It wasn't connecting to the Zeitronix hardware! I try over, and over, making sure the wires are okay… No go.

I decided to disconnect it, and reconnect it (the engine is still struggling to stay alive). (EDIT to Clarify: Disconnect the wiring harness from the zeitronix box, not the data serial cable to the laptop) I disconnect the Zeitronix, and I’m about to plug it back in… Wait a second, the car is running PERFECTLY. I plug the Zeitronix box back in and she instantly starts to sputter and spew black smoke. Unplug it, PERFECT, plug it in, sputter…

It was too dark out to continue my investigation, but it’s a priority tomorrow (Monday).

Has any one experienced this? I will not be happy if the box is dead.

Some people disagree where the wire in the RPM wire.

Some people wire to the large solid green wire & some wire to the green / red stripe wire i believe. DO NOT FOLLOW THIS EXACTLY. i'm just trying to remember.

Well anyways, if splice the wire incorrectly you run a risk of upsetting the ignition signal.

Just an idea.

Sorry to hear your zietronix is running bad, mine has been nothing but helpful.

yeah there was a how - to that had the wire wrong- or the placement of the wire was wrong. The green/black wire on the dme was actually a green i think- or the other way around- it was supposed to read that color wire on the klr- since this green and green/black wire tie together on the harness. I traced the pin# out to the correct wire before i tied it in and found this.

Interesting.

Keep in mind, the car was running very well until this point. I will disconnect one wire at a time, plug in the Zeitronix, and see which one makes a difference. I think it has to be either the RPM signal, or the AFM signal that's going astray.

I used this wiring diagram:

Wire 1 (red): connects to DME pin 18 (red/yellow) or other switched 12 volt source
Wire 2 – not used
Wire 3 (green): connects to DME pin 21 (green/black, RPM signal)
Wire 4 (orange): connects to boost sensor’s green wire
Wire 5 – not used
Wire 6 (yellow) connects to boost sensor’s red wire
Wire 7 (black) connects to DME pin 5 (brown, ground)
Wire 8 (brown) connects to boost sensor’s black wire
Wire 9 – not used
Wire 10 (grey) connects to KLR pin 22 (white/green, TPS)

Wire 11 – not used
Wire 12 (blue) spare input I connected to MAF DME pin 7

if you look at your DME- i believe that pin 21 goes to a green wire- there are like five green/black wires as well. I did an ohm test to check for continuity and only the green wire did w/ pin 21. It turns into green/black when it gets to the klr.

i believe Tom posted this discrepency after i pointed it out but not sure if he changed his actual how to post.

he fixed it I used that one and it works great for me. Did you make sure to check the pin #'s and not just splice the wires in by color?

Problem solved.

When I pulled out the DME/KLR board the Zeitronix ground wire came loose (just enough so that I didn’t notice). Without the ground wire connected, the Zeitronix was grounding out through the user input pin (which I connected to the AFM). After reattaching the ground everything went back to normal.

Thanks!

So to clarify, the zt2 is still an excellent product - one of the best things you can get for a 951 - in my opinion.

Honestly, I love this thing. As you put it, it's so simple it's stupid... And yet, such a powerful tool.
