Thats because its just the HID bulb. HID bulbs in housings not designed for them is a waste of time.

Sort of. You get the HID bulb and the ballast needed to run them, but in a housing designed for regular halogen bulbs you dont get the full effect of HIDs. The cut off line and beam is wrong.

I think it updates the looks and still gives an improvement over stock. I wouldn't use the word scam at all here.

When we were doing these conversions on our ROLEX series Daytona Prototype, they looked KILLER. We were using the Hella kits though. The DP does not have a headlight assy/lens of sorts, just a lexan cover over the headlight buckets. The drivers instantly noticed a difference during the 24 Hours at Daytona race this last year when it started getting dark and we swapped noses to the new headlight nose. (We didn't want to risk wrecking the car during the day with the good headlights in it as we only had one nose with the conversion done to it....)

Keep in mind that the ballest boxes are heavy and you need to mount them in an area that gets air movement and is sturdy enough to handle the weight. They get real HOT! We also heat-sinc'd them a little to help with the heat.

Jason at Paragon had one, with ballast, harness, bulbs etc, on the floor the other day beside his desk. It looked pretty simple and small, the ballast or is it a driver; looked about like a thick wallet.

They are definitely much better than stock even if installed into the stock Halogen lamps and reflectors. There are a few guys in the UK that have fitted similar kits to 944's and various 911 models and reported to be very pleased with the results. Some of the HID kits have a little movable reflector in the bulb to change the angle of the light pattern from the bulb for main beam which again makes the kits even more effective.

They should not get very hot if there are getting the voltage they need. Warm at most. I install 3-4 sets a week. They are real HIDs. HIDs from the factory put them in a PROJECTOR headlight. The projector headlight makes it a very narrowbeam, were halogen housings give them a very wide beam. They still look great and do give improved lighting. Remember though. These kits you are looking at are only low beam. There are a few companies that make lo/Hi beam kits but they go for more. HID kits seam to be going down in price everyday. I think they are very reasonably priced now. I have them in all my cars but the 944t. If I keep the car long term I will put them in.
