This motor makes more power stock than the 928's 4.5, most 4.7, and some 5.0 versions... nothing wrong with the 928, its just for a different market than the 944 turbo.
A biggie for me. A "sports car" without a manul trans......

not in my world, thanks. Every 928 I have seen (in person) was an automatic...... wtf

I had a 90 928 GT, 5L 5 speed. Stock with gutted cat it dynoed 310 rwhp. The torque curve went from 250 at 2500 to 294 at about 5400 and dropped to around 275 at 6300 red line. Dyno operator was a Mustang guy and said they spend a lot of monies to get that kind of power out of their 5 liter Fords.

For a short time I had it and an 88 Turbo S with chips and tweaked up suspension. The 944 TS dynoed 268 rwhp. I autocrossed them both at our local PCA which is more of a 1.2 mile time trial. The 944 TS was on Yoko A032Rs and 2 seconds faster than the 928 GT on Bridgestone Pole Positions. The front brakes got smokin' hot on the 928. Also consider this, the 928 was still a full second faster than anything else including a supercharged RS America!

Again, 944 Turbo has that turbo kick and the 928 has that big flat torque curve.

I loved the 928 most on them road trips with all the twisties, joy.

what about a 924s with a carbon fiber 951 body and spartan late 944 interior with a tricked out 968 suspension - brake upgrade of course - and a 968 transmission with a twin turbo ls1 engine swap?

i love all cool cars, but there is something about the simplicity of the porsche, but I've yet to own a ferrari

I get the impression that in the U.S. ,at least, 924/944 are much more common due to the much higher numbers imported during their heyday. This has driven the cost down a great deal and therefore is a way for younger guys to buy a Porsche. This then seems to fan the flames of "Well it's not a real Porsche" or "Porsche's have the engine in the rear" etc...but there is also the undercurrent that older guys do buy 928's as they do want a bit more comfort. So under the Porsche umbrella you have all these splinter groups who mostly love their breed the best. Then there's some snobbery and pissing contests between the minority groups. Silly really.
In Australia there really aren't many front engined P-cars at all and most people think that the 928 and the 944 are the same car, or worse a Mazda RX7 (not that I'm RX bashing here either). I love my car and have spent a stupid amount making it better and wouldn't swap it for anything.
Today I posted a 1.46 at a track called Eastern Creek. 8 months ago I posted a 1.55 when the quickest guys who are in the GT3's were doing 1.45. I have quite a bit left too so that's the most gratifying thing, improvement. Plus I can't wait to go to the next club day and throw a little scare into the almighty rear engined club.
I also love seeing some YouTube clips of modded 928's on the track as they sound fantastic and look like they would be a bunch of fun as well. So in the end it's not who's car is better as that comes down to how deep your pockets are. It's natural to be proud of your own beast. They are both entirely underrated and are scaring many much newer and more expensive cars still. Just ask the Aston Martin DB9 or the 996 who I pulled away from down the main straight today!

Both great cars, way ahead of their time, both probably outperformed 95% of all the cars in their hay day. I will not knock either car as eventually I will have a 951 as well.

As for the "my V8 toyota has 290hp"......????????? what did Toyota have for power from 1986-1989? Nothing. By the way how does that truck brake or handle in the corners?

Yes probably 70-80% of 928's are auto's, however if you look at stock performance numbers it looks like they really don't need a stick. So I don't believe it needs a manual to be a sports car, many purists would say a true sports car only has two seats(and a manual).

It is cool to discuss how both are cars can outperfrom many vehicles even though they are sometimes over 20 years older. It is funny to me when people brag about their new cars with all their innovations....oh yeah really Porsche did that 20 years ago nice to see the American manufacturers trying to catch up. Better yet ask any of the Porsche bashers what their favorite manufacturer was producing 20 years ago.....especially Subaru..in the 80's the ultimate basic transportation, I owned two of them.
