Default Need quick help - can't get input shaft back into clutch

Just finished installing the motor and we are trying to get the input shaft back in and can't get it to go. It engages about 3/4" of splines and stops. Used the clutch alignment too when installing clutch and am not sure where to go from here.

I push in the clutch pedal and hold it down with a golf club, gives more wiggle room, shaft will slide right in.

Tried the clutch trick and it didn't work. I'm gonna cut off the input shaft on a spare torque tube I have laying around and play with that and see if I can get it to work. How do you make sure the input shaft is going straight in. I have a jack under the rear of the motor to keep it level and there were two of us fooling with the ttube angle. The shaft would go in so about 3/4" of the splines would engage and the it would bind and be a PITA to pull back out.
