Default loss in power EDIT: update on post #6

hey guys.

Got the 951 up and running and well... its not running that great. It studders till about 4k rpm then you feel power, its only pulling like 9 in/hg for vacuum(at idle), and boost is only getting up to about 9psi. Its starts to run better as the car warms up. I thought vacuum leak, but i can not find one. I was also thinking (i know scary thought) that it might be the wastegate gaskets. I just don't want to start a project on this car and it not be the problem.

Any tips, ideas?

-Ian

maybe a intake leak either the gaskets or maybe a IC pipe?

What did you do to it? Is your timing off a tooth?

ok i found a small vacuum leak that i fixed (saw oil coming out of it... hmmmm), so idle is now at 12, boost is set right and it is running better (but the car was also warm).

Now it like studders a bit and feels like its holding back till about 4k rpm and then gets power. Maybe a bad injector? Wastegate gaskets blown out? something?

12 psi is too low. stupid question...have you checked the distributor? mine had similar symptoms (except the low vacuum), and it was because the rotor was disintegrating. at low speeds it was rubbish and not making contact properly because the arm was hanging loose, but as engine rpm increased the momentum would throw the arm straighter and it would function more like normal.

12 psi is where i have it set BTW.

The distributor on my S2 was probably 1500 miles old, as well as the cap. I overlooked a crack in it when I checked it.

That wasn't the problem though. My car suddenly started running bad and didn't have any power in lower rpms, and would stumble when accelerating. Idled like it had huge cams in it. Progressively run better when higher rpms were attained. I would do a quick and cheap compression check to rule out a broken valve spring like my car. This probably isn't your problem, but you never know and to check it is very easy.

i meant 12 in/hg is too low for vacuum...oh wait, psi? isn't that like 24 in/hg of vacuum? that's the highest vacuum i've ever heard of on a 951 .

~18 in/Hg when warm is a good idle for stock

yeah that's pretty low. must be a decent sized vacuum leak somewhere, i left one of the lines off the manifold off once and i could still pull 16in when warm.

Looks like I have 18HGs at idle but only 6psi of boost...how unfair. I ordered a new bypass valve.
