I went to start my 88 951 and it wouldn't fire up at all. The tach seemed to have erratic bouncing so I checked the reference sensor wires. No luck. I started checking wires at the DME and KLR and noticed the KLR was pretty warm after only a few cranks.
I cranked the engine some more and noticed my boost gauge was wobbling around when the engine was turning over. I turned the ignition on and heard a muffled pop sound as well as a foul, old-tire smell. Traces of smoke lurked around the KLR/DME area so I disconnected the battery. After a little while, I reconnected the battery and turned the ignition on. The boost gauge now wobbles around without even cranking the engine over. KLR fried? Thanks for your help.

From page 38-42 PWM
"The engine can be operated without the K/CP control unit in an emergency or for trouble shooting purposes.
In order to do this, the ignition signal must be bridged at the K/CP control unit plug terminals 9 and 16 with an auxiliary wire.
The engine will then run with reduced power."
"Reduced power" means 6 degrees of timing retard and boost over pressure limited to around 0.3 Bar.
Hope this helps!

You can perform the TEST by bridging KLR #9 & #16, however DO NOT DRIVE IT. The DME relies on other signals from the KLR in order to operate correctly.
When the KLR is bridged, ignition is not altered (no 6deg retard). When you bridge the IN/OUT how can the KLR alter timing???

That's correct... you can bypass the timing (cycling) valve but the KLR also looks after knock. If you run without it, your car will not perform well as ignition timing will be retarded 6 degrees.

No plans to drive it til I get the KLR and the A/C fixed. I have the A/C put together and wanted to run the engine to get the freon charged but that's when the KLR decided to self-terminate.
