I rebuilding my 951 and was wondering if its "worth" changing out the piston rings whilke im in there. I( havd a tiny bit of blue smoke on start-ups if the car had not been started in a couple days and it was only on start-up. Im guessing it was the turbo but am not 100%
IS there a way to check the rings to see if they (or one) uis leaking?
If I do replace them then should i only get genuine Porsche rings? or can I save lots of $$$ and go with aftermarket oem type?
Is it bad to just replace the rings w/o boring and going with a "over sized"? or is that not even possible?

Get a leak down test kit. Not hard to do. It will tell which cylinder is showing the most wear. There was a thread on this about a month ago. A good reading would be in the 5% range +/- 2% of pressure loss. Good luck.

Smoking at start up is more indicative of leaky valve seals more than piston rings. The oil leaks down the stem of the valves and then into the cylinder where it burns when you first start the car. As just mentioned perform or have done a leak down test on all cylinders.
To be honest I would just keep driving and enjoying the car if that is all that is wrong.
Let us know what you find.

Only replace the rings if you have lots of blow by, crankcase pressurization or poor compression.
Sounds to me like there are lots of other places to check before you do rings. It is ALOT of work to do rings. I run original rings in my 144k+ mile 944 spec race motor. It had 144k on when I rebuilt it into my race motor and I kept the original rings. 60+ races later it is still going strong.
