Head Gasket Replacement Cost
Hi,
Looks like I need a new head gasket, mine let go @ VIR this past weekend. Motor stock except for Vitesse chips. 3bar fpr, and accuboost. Was wondering
what the going rate would be to get the head gasket replaced (head checked, etc).
Not sure I have the skills to DYI.
Thanks,
Dave

1. Why did it blow?
2. Make sure you fix that issue first before messing with new hg etc. or it will just blow again.
3. Cost depends on what parts. All bone stock and no hoses to replace or anyrthing else, about $750-$1,500 depending on the shop. Then $75-100 or so to deck the head.
Add in MLS hg, new studs and new hoses etc. that need and of course the cost will go up from there.

Only $750 to do a headgasket? Where the hell do you get your work done, cuba? I wish it were that cheap around here...
I would guess closer to the $2k range for a shop to do it. Haven't gotten a quote myself, but I would assume it is somewhere in the mid to high teens for the hours of labor, plus parts.

Well, in CA you probably pay $200 per hour??????
High teens for labor on a headgasket??? High teens for a clutch or a spun bearing maybe.
A shop that knows what they are doing should be 8-10 hours billed @ $80-100 per hour puts you at a low of $640 - $1,000 labor

Its only that few hours for a headgasket? Interesting. Learn something new every day.

*after thinking for a minute*
Oh yeah! The reason the price is higher is because of all the other "while you're in there" projects you start to do. At least if you're doing the work yourself. I think my 6month headgasket job and so-called-but-not-at-all-related "while I'm in there" projects will be close to $3k by the time I'm done. Probably more, now that I think about it...

Oh definately the price will, and usually, goes way up since most do the "while your in there" approach.
But if you just need to do only hg give or take, a good shop should be able to pull and replace in 8 hours total.

Dave, Years back there were no good 951 shop in the triangle area! I would start by finding someone that can actually do a good job.
Try to determine the cause of the failed gasket. Based on your other thread, you do not have a boost gauge nor and AFR gauge, so this might be difficult now. Of course, you need both in the future.
