Ok the goal is to get 100 octane (or very colse to it) by adding Toluene and I found this formula.

Toluene is 114 octane. This formula is used to figure what octane you get:

( Gallons_of_gas x Octane_of_gas ) + ( Gallons_of_toluene x 114 )
___________________________________________________
Total Gallons

This gives the octane of the mixture after you add toluene.


Fer example,

(10 gallons gas x 93 octane) + (4.5 gallons toluene x 114 octane)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- = 99.51
14.5


So "iffin I got this figgered right" I would need to add four and a half gallons of Toluene to every 10 gallons of gas to get near 100 octane?

Ok for anyone doing this what is the best method to mix the Toluene into the gas? Simply pour it in the tank and then the gas on top of that or mix it in gas cans first?

Oh yeah the goal here is to run at 18 psi safely. I realize this may be overkill as some run up to 20 PSI on pump gas all day long but I live in fear for my headgasket.

Is Toluene as likely to foul plugs as Xylene? and between the two choices which is preferable? I am sorting though old threads here.

I am not chemist, but I heard that toluene has a better combustion than xylene, that’s why xylene can help to keep the heat down because the extra xylene that doesn’t get burned

So your take on it is not to excede 25%? which will put me at.... 97.2 octane? Is that enough of a safety margine?

Also what is anyones method for mixing?

Your formula is correct - you are close to 31% - that is okay.
I fouled plugs at close to 50% xylene, and that is with a very powerful ignition. I wouldn't go over 35% with a stock ignition.

You should check on buying a barrel of race gas, better price overall, get it delivered and get a small handpump. I got a drum of 104 delivered several months ago for $235.00, much better pricing in bulk.

No kidding, I had not even thought of that... I will check into that in this area. Is there a fomula for mixing race gas like the Toluene fomula or would it simply be the same?

Good day Bret. (Temp highjack) FYI, just thought I would give you an update on my race car. Took back to dyno and the A/F ratio was all over the place. Got the Vitesse chipboard installed and retuned. I am now getting a bit more HP than before but running 3lbs less boost to get it. Ready for the track again.

Where did you get that fuel from? 55 gallons is a drum correct? I'll buy some today if that is the price at about 4.25 per gallon.

Well I looked back at my ticket and it was last year, September to be exact. I called today because I'm low, "you have a reached a number that has been disconnected"; maybe the profit margin wasn't enough. We paid 5.25 at Hallett recently which I didn't think was too bad - of course, the #4 rod thing is costing about $4k to fix and upgrade.

I got this drum from a little distributorship, down the street from Mark Martin Ford in Batesville AR, about 30 minutes up the road from Heber Springs. They bring 110 leaded down for the local hot rod guys and I asked for a drum of 104, he delivered in free since he had the other stores to do. Oh well, that drum was nice. Just found a new guy in Batesville, 5.75/gallon said he'd call back with a drum price.

Craig, good to hear. Us - Block(bore to 101mm or .038mm over piston measurement), crank(crossdrill all journals - rebalance), head should all be done later this week, new Wossner rods are in today (Racers Edge), gaksets, seals, bearings - all in hand, as are the new pistons.

For those that use 100 (GT, Sunoco, etc.) what are the current prices??? I assume they have gone up with all other gas prices.

I just checked Xylene recently at Home Depot and it has gone from $9.99 a gallon about a year ago to $15 a gallon now.

supposedly, it can be obtained for around $3/gallon by the drum.
