Default To sleeve or not to sleeve

This isn't about the pros and cons, this is about whether it's needed in my case. The machine shop I took my block to said that their is a 1/10,000th wear ridge at the top of the cylinder and they want to bore and sleeve the engine because I am planning on making it into a track car. He feels that this ridge may break a ring due to running at higher RPM's. I do plan to track the car but I'm not planning to make it a race car, just a DE/track day car. Do ya'll think I would be best served by sleeving or can this ridge just be honed out with the Sunnen process? Any thoughts?

Thanks

The ridge can be reamed out but is it really necessary? Your pistons, rings aren't going to travel any farther than when they made the ridge in the 1st place. I think 1/10,000 is pretty normal. Were the bores otherwise smooth with no damage? I would be more concerned how good your bore measurements were before I would bore and sleeve creating a whole new issue and expense.

Yes, everything else is in good shape, he recommends new valve guides because mine are a little loose, but I was planning on that anyway. He said that if you start running high RPM's alot, you risk breaking a ring. I was thinking the same thing as you though about the travel of the pistons, until I read something about stepped rings to deal with this issue. Not for our cars but I had never heard of that before.

I was advise against sleeving unless I was going to go to a full Wet liner type arrangement.
With the wear level you have it is not really an issue. If you are that bothered go to an oversize piston and rebore

I'm not that bothered, I just want to find out what the gurus on here recommend.

If nothing else, you'll get many differing viewpoints and then there's those in the Wet camp and those in the Dry. So perhaps 3 possibilities.

What kind of power and RPM are you wanting to run?

Have you and your mechanic considered honing recoating the cylinder walls and going one over on the piston? Have you had the bores measured?

Id like to be around 340 RWHP. Not planning to raise the RPM much over stock. I will talk more about honing but I think from what he was saying that the bores are within spec, I will get some more details Monday.

Punch it out 0.020" and have it re-coated and just run an upper block reinforcement plate. Should be fine.

They are worried about .0001?

Cylinder walls are not coated, they are acid-etched.
