Default Quaife TBD

looking for info. regarding the installation of the Quaife TBD. I've read that there are additional parts needed. Can anyone confirm this? and what parts if any are needed? I have an 86 951 and am considering going this route as aposed to finding an P-LSD unit.

I have the GT version TBD (Guard transmission). I didn’t put it in yet. The Porsche factory manual shows you how to do it. Take your time and be very precise. Your gearbox will thank you. As far as extra parts you need spacers…you can get them from Porsche. You have to figure out which ones you need by measuring the backlash between the pinion and ring gear. Also you need the gear for the oil cooler…GT sells the gear for their version I think the Quaife uses the stock gear. Hard to find but they are out there… you can just take off the oil cooler if you want ….

I got it from autotech, they are the US distributer, I can't remember what I paid, I think around 1000$, but I get around a 20% discount on most parts because I work at a shop. I have a trans cooler.

The gear on the left is what you get with an open diff, the one on the right is the one you will need for a LSD or Torque Bias Differential unit. You also have to purchase several sets shims after you take measurements on the initial assembly. Look at the procedure in the manual, it does a good job of describing the process.

So yours went right in?....you didn't have to follow the procedure in the shop manual? I didn't put mine in yet but I will check it first....it’s a big process..If I can save some steps that would be cool!!! The pinion and ring gear have to be set per spec or you will waist them..they are a matched set...big $$$$$

i'm fairly confused here...Where can you get these additional parts, ie (pinion, ring gear & shims)? What are the additional costs? It's odd, when I spoke with a dealer regarding this set-up, he stated there were no additional parts required??

is TBD same as ATB? if so I'm opting for this as well as oem LSD's for 016R doesn't grow on trees, and often needs an overhaul.

Fluidplay

You are basically going to open your Trans and remove your regular differential (diff). Take the ring gear off your diff and put it on the new diff (TBD) the pinion is in your Trans. The parts you need are a new gasket for Trans, the New Diff... TBD or LSD plus the shim spacers plus the gear for the oil cooler….Guard Transmission...http://www.guardtransmission.com/ Sells a Torque Bias Differential for our cars…High quality stuff!!!!! NO BS!!!! The Best!!! ….He does not give them away …but you don’t have to service a TBD like a LSD (clutches to wear out) so hopefully you won’t have to take it apart again…the pinion is the huge gear that turns the ring gear that turns the back wheels….these are matched at the factory and do wear…so resetting the backlash is not a bad idea…be very nice to your gearbox and it will be nice to you….I will email you a copy of the Porsche shop manual that shows you how to do this if you need it PM me and let me know…you can do this …

There are two stock oil cooler gears for the diff. One is for used in the LSD and the other in the open diff. If you start with an open diff, make sure you have a gear that will fit the unit. If you need to purchase the gear from the dealer, be prepared to shell out over $300 for the LSD one. I was a little taken back when I found this out. I have replaced my open diffs with a TBD in my 86 and a LSD in the 87. The 87 didn't have this problem since it doesn't have an oil cooler.

Adjusting the preload on the bearings is very important and it is done by purchasing a set of shims of different thickness to adjust the play. This procedure is explained in the manual and requires time and a little math to calculate the shim thickness you will need to order.
