Default battery over charging?

I was on my way home and noticed the the voltage meater was reading into the red(16) i pulled over and steam was coming from the battery, i filled it back up with some bottled water i had in the car, turned everything on in the car and drove home about ten miles the voltage reading was just above 14 while everything was turned on.

so is this a voltage regulator?

and should there be any signs that the voltage regulator was the thing that went bad?

I've had many VW alternators apart but never the Porsche one. If similar, there really won't be any signs that the voltage regulator is bad. From your description it does sound like that's what it is.

Don't know what to make of the fragments. Are they tiny particles? If so, it could be material worn off the brushes and slip rings.

Is the regulator part of an integrated brush and regulator assembly? If so, you'll have new brushes when you replace the regulator. Just be sure to check the condition of the slip rings. I've had VWs that had some pretty severe wear on the slip rings.

I just had my alternator rebuilt. It was charging up and down. The brushes were half gone and the slip rings were worn out. Cost about $55.

Better tighten it... You should be able to turn the belt 90* with your fingers but not more (at the longest part).
