What about a 928, or 914 if you're looking to keep it in a budget (& if you wanna talk rare, 914's are gettin harder & harder to come by; plus they look so weird, they're like nothing else out there nowadays, install some HID's...). If not then why notta 911 or '97 - '99 986? Just my $0.02cdn
I had a type 4 (914 engine) in my 912e, that motor was sucky to say the least. Very expensive and almost impossible to smog in CA. I like the sleek lines of the 924 turbo but I don't think it looks worse, just not as sexy.

Default THE 931

Only 3000 or so ever imported to the US is why you never see them.

Are they less refined and more angry sounding than a 944? Oh yes indeed. That's half the fun.

Can you add things to them to make them faster, and more refined? No problem, but don't expect anyone to hold your hand and feed you off the shelf kits and stuff for them..

Are they for everyone? No not really, just a select few.

Header panel will not fit a 951.

And the 931 is far more distinctive and more of a "collectible" than a 951 will ever be. Possible exception for the turbo cab (Euro only), 1985 model (Euro only) and Turbo Cup.

I love my 931 because when I drive it, it makes me feel like no 944 or 968 can! It has a raw sense of handling, and when I turn the key and the mechanical fuel injection lights off, wow!!!! I did turn the boost up to 14psi, I use an adjustable warm up regulator to get a little more fuel, no cat, rebuilt turbo, and also tracked down and purchased a NOS 937 intercooler it was pricey but now the car screams along with more thrill than a 951 and is as fast as a stock 951 now! The fact that there are literally none on the road is also nice because mines in excellent condition!

If you do get it stay on top of the valve adjustment as they need to be adjusted every 5,000 miles or so!
Good Luck!

Do you have a dyno sheet for your 968 replica? I will love to see it.

I have not done any dyno runs yet but I am getting 2 hours of dyno time at RPM in Rhonert Park to tune for the best possible outcome in the trim I am going to run the car in for good streetability as I am not planning on tracking this car at all. Just a garage queen!

Personally I love all things Porsche, but to replace the exhaust system on one of those far exceeds the value of the car...nuff said!

Cool ride and something different. If you have the $ and no desire to further mod the 951, go for it.

931 is a great chassis for a v8 swap.

The 924 GTS Cup I drove was one of the most fun cars I have ever been in. Its way less refined than the 951 which is kind of fun. They may not look at great in pictures, but look at a GTS in person and you will be shocked...they are damn hot. The rear bolt on fender flares are very sexy. When you add in the GTS Cup lemans spoiler, cage, and 9" wheels the car is nothing like what your used to. If you want a fun and expensive car to add to your stable, then it would probably be worth it. If your looking for a cheap alternative to the 951, you will be solely mistaken. Many 931's are cheap because no one takes care of them. If you put half the amount work it takes to keep a 951 nice in the 931, you will spend twice as much.

The 931 will be more expensive to maintain than your 951, Driving wise it is similar, yet different , i have had mine for 20 yrs so the mods and cash spent sneaks up on you , the 951 is better in everyway , but there is still enjoyment in all Porsche models. You will need a very special 951 to run past my 924, but i prefer the 951 for day to day driving, more refined , better ride , a/c etc and my 924 carrera gtr replica is mostly track use , but i do run the streets every now and again .. , biggest maintaince is cam and valve train parts ,very expensive , used parts are your best friend and parts new will cost a lot ......mine has more 951/944 parts than 931 parts

I love my 924 GTS replica. It is in mint cond so I don't drive it much. Since you don't see them very often it does get lots of looks. It was converted from an orginal 81 924 turbo so it still has the unrefined mechanical feel, a real nice change once in a while. I do hope they climb in value that would be an added bonus. I would say get one.

The Carrera GTR had an output of 375HP with a 6.5:1 compression ratio, with a giGANTIC turbocharger and intercooler on it.

Your 951 would need a chip, cams and probably valve work to get those numbers, but will be much cheaper in the long run. A 931GTR clone would take enormous amounts of money and time to replicate, if it's even possible with a 2.0 Audi block. One major difference is where coolant enters the block; on the front rather than the side.
