944 turbo and a u-haul dollie
Hey guys I have been on the fourms awhile but I never really post anything I use this forum as a tool for my car. Any-hoot, the question I have is can I tow my car with a dollie form south GA to north WV with out breaking something. My car has been sitting at my dads house down there for about a year and I am ready to bring back home. I tried serching but really didnt find what I was looking for.

I rented one of the auto transports to bring my car home since I didn't have a trailer yet. They work well and only require hookup for lights since they use the hydraulic piston brakes that are actuated off a slip joint on the tongue. Just need to have a truck big enough to haul it. IIRC the price was the same as the dolly. If you decide on the dolly, it will work just make sure to lock the steering column as the front wheels will work their way out of the straps as you make left and right turns and should be fine in neutral as long as it's a manual transmission.

I pulled a turbo about 10 miles that way (with LSD) and an NA about 300. The only problem is getting the car on the dolly. With the turbo I used two 6 ft 2X6's as ramps. Still there was some lifting needed. If you have a half ton pick-up the trailor is probably too heavy. 3/4 ton - no problem, Diesel - ya don't even know its back there. A come-along is helpful but don't bother with the tow hook, its just too light (opinion). Bruce

i had to tow my car to the garage, i used one of the transport trailers, it worked great, i told uhaul that it was for an 86 951 and they told me that the dollie would not work, i guess because the car was too low? i wanted to use the trailer anyway, it seems safer to me!

Get the trailer. Last time I used one of these the hooks were too large to fit the tow hooks in the front and rear of the car, so I had get a smaller set on my own. You'll be amazed how much a car can move around if not really tightened down.

No it doesnt.
You need at least two people, three is really nice - just push it on up. I have done this so many times it's not funny. With the Uhual trailer it's super easy because of the long ramps, the angle is very shallow.
EDIT - I loaded a 951S that was not running by myself the other day. All I used was a good come-along and a tire chock. It's really not that big of a deal, just have some good straps, the correct trailer, and a person or two to help.
