If the wheels were hitting the housing you would know immediately, it makes a very distinct sound that does not sound like turbo whirr, it's a very fast knocking noise.
You typically would not see any metallic flakes if the wheel was hitting the housing as these would be immediately sucked into your engine. You can pull the angled coupler between the charge pipe and turbo and generally the oil film will have collected some of the aluminum debris.

Geoff, Dude! What the F happened? You are soooo on the mod path now.
Mike, there is so much runout on that you can see it from across the street!!! It's pathetic. And this "repair" has zero hours on it!

there doesn't seem to be engine damage, it's not as bad as it could have been... but I'm still going to clean up everything that gets air after the turbo... I'll be doing that when it's all apart...

Geoff, are you doing some sort of an investigation as to the cause of bent compressor blades?
Hope all is well inside!!
And now I'm worried... I can here my turbo too

I'll check it out when I pull the turbo off. I saw through the mirror that the compressor nut was still there, so that isn't the cause. if I had to guess, the bearing went out, had some wobble to the compressor wheel. with the compressor wheel's new found freedom to move around, it decided it would declare war on the housing and attack it... well, it lost...

Geoff, that sucks man! I know the feeling.. Sounds like its time for a K27/6 -- if you can wait for a little bit you might find one for $600 or so. Or you can go with a K27/8..

I've got a K26/8 coming in from Paragon, should be here friday. as for the old one, I've got someone who's offered to buy the /8 hotside, but if that falls through, I might be able to make it into a K27/8... hmmmmmmmm....
